OUT

FOCUS

I just shot the Hawaii Rainbow baseball team’s come-from-behind victory over 10th ranked Oregon State, and the jubo that followed was ruined–thanks to my ubiquitous and ever-reliable Mark III.

I’ve been a loyal Canon guy since 2002, when the first 1D series camera came out, and have shot with all the successive models that have come out.  I’m just so disappointed yet again with the lack-lustre performance of this camera.  There’s is absolutely no excuse why this shot just isn’t in focus.  Luckily I was able to redeem myself with this shot:

Personally, I thought the other shot was a better moment, as it was more defining–ironic as it’s just O.O.F.–

Girls Hoops Jube

Whoa, two posts in one day?  YES!

Last night, I photographed a nailbiting game between Konawaena and Lahainaluna in the HHSAA Girls Basketball championships at Blaisdell Arena.  Of course, afterward there’s the jubey shot, and it’s always a toss up because you’ll never know what to expect–where the players will turn, how they will react, where they will huddle, etc. and on and on.  Last night, I was lucky enough to position myself in the right spot, even ahead of television and the competing newspaper.  Called it a hunch, but I played bumper cars with elated jumping players and coaches to align myself for the celebratory shot.

Another take on it:

After the trophy and medal presentations to both teams, I noticed that the ceremonial cutting of the net by the winning team happened to line up with the scoreboard, so I went for a different look, and different type of jubey:

Lahainaluna's Maiki Viela, top, waves the net to her team mates after the 2010 HHSAA Girls Division I State Championship basketball game between the Konawaena Wildcats and the Lahainaluna Lady Lunas on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 at Blaisdell Arena. I shot several frames of Viela cutting the net, both horizontal and vertical, but compositionally, it wasn’t working for me.  I canted (tilted) the frame slightly, and was able to get the team looking up at Viela as she swung the net around triumphantly, with the score in the background–a very storytelling image of a come-from-behind win.  I’m very glad that our sports department went with it!

Baseball’s here!

And so is a new post!!

Howdy, Y’all!  With winter came time for a hibernation on the blog….of course I’m just kidding!  But on a serious note, I got to shoot the second day of Rainbow Baseball today from a unique angle–the television riser, thanks to my friend, UH sports photographer extraordinaire Jay Metzger.

And here’s a nice shot I haven’t nailed in a long time.  Beginner’s luck, perhaps, since it’s my first ball game in almost a year!
