Thanks for your compliments, Andy and Sprayhawk! Yes it was slightly blurry on the real stang, but I'm human! I didn't have it at f99! :)

Ryan Bagley,
When I started out, I owned all my gear, which was basically 2 bodies, a wide-zoom, a 70-200, and a flash. This was all in college. Thankfully, I am fortunate to work for a newspaper that cares and takes pride in its photography, and so we are all provided with Canon gear tailored to each of our shooting styles. If you can make do with what BYU-H provides you, more power to you! :) Remember, the camera is merely a tool--the vision is 90% of it, and the tool is the other 10.

Tyg,
Thanks so much! When I was a kid, I always dreamed of owning a '67 fastback (actually that dream is still alive!)

Philip and Gail,
Either one will do fine, but the main thing, especially if you want to take nice shots of sporting activities, etc. is to buy a good lens. The Canon EF 70-200F4L IS is a great lens for a reasonable price. Thanks for reading!

Joel,
I've never tried the 100-400 with any converters, but I can imagine it doing just that! It's a great lens for golf!

The 100-400L is a great lens but will have problem with auto-focus when using extenders. It will AF search for days when you have an extender on it.

My wife and I are looking for our first DSLR. We're considering the Canon XSi or the Nikon D60 Kits from costco. Does anyone have comments about which way to go? Basically taking picture of our kids and sporting activities they are involved with. Mahalo for sharing! P&G

Hey Jammaquino how does equipment allowance work at real life newspapers? I work at the BYU - hawaii newspaper and all the camera/lens/sd cards are all supplied. Do you need your own setup before starting at a paper?

I too, have the 100-400mm on my 5D and love it. For a while I was carrying it around as my walk-around lens as I had sold my 28-135mm. I have probably taken 5,000 shots with it.

It takes a bit to get the hang of it because it is a f/ 5.6, but once you do, you will not hesitate to use it for a lot of other things. On the 5D I have even used it for portrait pics and they turned out great.

As for the 1.4 extender, I know 2 fellows that have used it. A small degradation (1 f/ stop down) in quality with the 5D, but on smaller sensors, I doubt you will see it.

I'm by no means a professional, but i have the 100-400L for my 20D for a couple of years and I absolutely love it. I'm not sure if it'll work with the extender though - I know for sure it goes into old-timey mode (aka "What's this autofocus all the kids are talking about these days?")... but man I love the images it produces.

The only down side to getting the "L" glass? I want more. More more more!

Jamm - been stopping by and enjoying for some time now. Gotta do something to get my aloha fix (landlocked in KS).

Got a gear question for you. Do you have an opinion on the Canon 100-400 L lens? Ever use it with the 1.4x? I'm looking for a lens that gets me some flexibility and is comparable to the focal length I get with my 300F4L and 2x. The body I use is a 1D Mk II.

Wow how's that for some crazy DOF? Ok so the car is a shade bit blurry but we'll excuse you. Just this once. ;)

A cool shot! I always enjoy your blog entries. The story behind the photo is just as entertaining as the picture itself.
