February 27th, 2010

Julia Sojot wasn’t intimidated by the protective fu dog at the C.S. Wo & Sons store entry.

C.S. Wo & Sons celebrated Chinese New Year with friends and family during an afternoon event at its main showroom on Beretania Street.

In addition to enjoying fortune telling, taking home calligraphic good wishes, viewing new jade and precious stone collections from Jade by Nikolai and food from Spices restaurant and Superb Sushi, the event was also provided an opportunity to see the first of Shanghai Tang’s Spring/Summer 2010 ready-to-wear collection, “Love Restraint,” and also including one contemporary qipao (below right) from the Imperial Tailors, the company’s equivalent to couture.

Feb. 28 is the last day to see the Shanghai Tang display at C.S. Wo, after which, of course, you’ll find the ready-to-wear on the racks at the Shanghai Tang boutique at Ala Moana Center.

Ivy Higa needs your vote in Oscars challenge

February 26th, 2010

Ivy Higa’s entry in the Oscars Design Challenge 2010. Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on March 1.

Hawaii designer Ivy Higa is one of nine designer finalists entered in the Oscars Design Challenge 2010 to have her original gown worn by one of the on-stage presenters during the Academy Awards ceremony taking place March 7.

Go to or click on this link to go to the voting page. You’ll be able to look at videos of the gowns on a red carpet, then will have to register to vote.

Of course we want to support the local girl, but beyond such sentimentality, she has the talent to win it! Check out the images from her fall/winter 2010 collection that just debuted at New York Fashion Week, as well as my recent story in advance of her show.

Here are a few of the pieces she presented:
