Another look at the ’80s

Having posted several of Paul Brown’s 1980s hairstyle creations last week, I’m continuing that thought with some photos Frieda Hulse shared with me last summer when I was in New York.

You may remember her Smith Street boutique, Urban Nomad, which she packed up before moving to Brooklyn. During the ’80s, she was a nightclub habitue living in Manhattan and designing all the ensembles she wore to Studio 54, Mudd Club, Area, Palladium and all the renowned clubs of the era. She was also a hair model to stylists who appreciated the fearless way she brought their creations to life.

Having moved back to New York, settling in Brooklyn, she recovered her old photos and shared them with me. Thanks, Frieda!

In New York, Freida adopted the name “Haruko” and showed with other Soho designers at Studio 54. Below are some of her creations in the spirit of the times:
