Sales of jade will benefit IONA Contemporary Dance.

If you’re looking for holiday entertainment that’s different from the norm, head out to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel tonight, where IONA Contemporary Dance will perform “The Angel of Thanksgiving.”

A showcase of jade and fine Asian arts is on display through 8:30 p.m. today, the 27th, with the IONA performance slated to begin at 5 p.m.

In the performance, artistic director Cheryl Flaharty and dancer Maile Baran-Primacio bring the angel Gabriel to life, based on Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “The Annunciation,” in which the Gabriel brings a message of hope to the Virgin Mary.

Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting was the inspiration for IONA’s holiday work.

Flaharty said, “Our Angel this Thanksgiving will bring a significant message for each person, and will present it to you.” The prayer messages will be given on small slips of paper to everyone who accepts them.

The event is a benefit for IONA, which is beginning its 20th year of creative service to the community. A portion of the proceeds from sales of fine jade — discounted by at least 40 percent for this event — from the boutique will go to IONA. Previews of items are available at

Other fine arts items from Asia will be showcased by the boutique Cina Cina, which will be offering  complimentary tea, cookies and validated parking.
