Twitter, Condit’s UFC debut and Josh Thomson

Date April 1, 2009

First of all, I have plunged into the world of tweeting. Unlike this blog, which is more in-depth, I’ll be on twitter with various tidbits of news about anything and everything from all the sports I cover here at the Star-Bulletin. Check me out at billyhull.

Secondly, what a fight tonight between Martin Kampmann and Carlos Condit. You got a little bit of everything between two guys that just went back and forth all fight long. From striking to ground-and-pound to jiu-jitsu, you got a little bit of everything in this fight. Very close bout with Kampmann winning by split decision, taking the fight 29-28 on two scorecards while Condit won the other 29-28. I scored the bout 29-28 myself. Good decision?

I’m partial to guys that I’ve covered fighting in Hawaii, so I was rooting for Condit to enter the UFC with a big splash. Condit was of course part of that Rumble on the Rock tournament that featured Jake Shields (former EliteXC champ), Frank Trigg, Yushin Okami and some guy named Anderson Silva…

In very depressing news, the StrikeForce lightweight title fight between champion Josh Thomson and former titleholder Gilbert Melendez set for April 11 is off after Thomson broke his leg training today.

“I was sparring hard and I broke my leg, above my ankle, during an exchange,” the 30-year-old Thomson said in a release. “I’m very upset.  All the hard work was done and it was time to fight. I was looking forward to putting on a great show for the fans.  All I can say is that I’ll be back when I get healthy.”

According to the same release, he is expected to be out 2-3 months, but I would think it may be longer for an injury this serious. The organization says it is looking for a replacement to fight Melendez on the April 11 card, which is the company’s first since buying EliteXC. One of the best fights of 2008 was Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le in EliteXC on Showtime, and Shamrock makes his return 1 year later in the main event against Nick Diaz.

The card will be shown at 7 p.m. on a 3-hour tape delay in Hawaii on Showtime. The PPV card also features Scott Smith vs. Benji Radach, Christine “Cyborg” Santos vs. Hitomi Akano and Brett Rogers vs. Abongo Humphrey.
