Environmentalists were startled on Friday when the state House recommitted a bill that would require businesses to collect a fee on single-use plastic bags to help finance state watershed, agriculture and food security initiatives.

In the same floor session, lawmakers also recommitted a bill that would have carved out an exemption to the state’s smoking ban for bars and nightclubs.

State House Majority Leader Pono Chong (D, Maunawili-Kaneohe) explained afterward that he made a mistake by including the plastic bag bill with the smoking bill. The two bills were separated by just two places on the House order of the day, and he said he had them both highlighted on his copy.

“Ooops,” Chong said.

Chong said the House would consider a Senate version of the plastic bag bill when it crosses over.

*Update: Some curious observers are circulating a video of the House proceedings on Friday, which shows that there was a recess called before the motion to recommit the plastic bag bill.

  1. Chicken Grease:

He should be apologizing for sending smoking exemption bill back.

“his copy”, eh? Well, overlooking a most important bill written on the very medium tree huggers seemingly need to force us to stop using, and, what’s this? A highligher’s involved? Non-toxic, right? Pono, indeed.

Hey. What’s are the park-wrecking occupiers supposed to use when plastic bags are totally banned? Thought they were pretty much siblings, the tree-huggers and the complain9-complain9-complain% huggers?
