County Challenge Dismissed

The state Supreme Court has dismissed a challenge to the redistricting plan filed by the 2011 City Council Reapportionment Commission.

A challenge was filed Jan. 30 by Ewa Beach resident Glenn Oamilda, who challenged the plan because it split the Ewa community along Renton Road, creating one district composed of Ewa Expandable Homes and Lincoln Village and a second district composed of Fernandez Village, Haole Camp, Laulima, Tenny, Varona Villages and Honouliuli.

Oamilda argued, in part:

‘Ewa and Honouliuli are the oldest communities in the ‘Ewa region. Throughout a century of sugar plantation life-style, the people have developed close, vibrant and strong family ties with shared cultural and traditional values; and thus, should remain together -as one, whole, intact -in Council District 1 not subject to any redistricting or reapportionment.

The high court denied the petition, stating there is nothing in city ordinances requiring that the communities remain undivided, adding that it found no evidence to back Oamilda’s claim that the commission acted in bad faith in drawing up the plan.

The Supreme Court’s order:
SCPW-12-0000058
