Dante Carpenter, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Hawaii, has told the state Office of Elections that Laura Thielen has not met the party’s eligibility requirements to run for elected office as a Democrat.

Thielen, a director of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources under former Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican, has filed to run for a Windward state Senate seat.

The party has determined that Thielen is not eligible because she has not been a party member for at least six months.

Scott Nago, the state’s chief elections officer, responded in a letter to Carpenter on Wednesday that Thielen has properly filed her paperwork and taken an oath that she is a member of the party.

Nago told Carpenter that the party would have to file an objection to Thielen’s candidacy in Circuit Court.

Carpenter has said the party would make an announcement on Thielen’s candidacy later this week.

nago, you are only an elections official, you are not supported to tell the parties what they can or cannot do. you cannot certify a person’s claim that she has good standing in the party. who do you think you are god?

  2. Auto De Fe:

They should demand a copy of Thielen’s ‘long form’ birth certificate.

  3. Goober:

Thielen wants to be famous for fifteen minutes. Once a missionary always a missionary. Once Thielen is in lingle gets all these secret messages sent to her on her email or text.

Dante’s Inferno is again in limbo.

Nago was just following the State law, wasn’t he?

Why? Simple, “LINDA LINGLE” that’s why.
