`Green roofs’

Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Thursday shared his vision for urban redevelopment in Kakaako, a blend of residential, commercial and recreational uses that he hopes will evolve into a national model.
As the governor was about to wrap up his luncheon address at the Plaza Club, Nancie Caraway, his wife, rushed to the podium to whisper some advice.
“And green roofs,” Abercrombie said with a chuckle. “I can assure you there will be green roofs, because when I wake up, the first thing the person on my immediate left tells me in the morning is not `Good morning, dear.’ It’s `green roofs.’ It’s what I hear.”

I have a vision for a Hawaii where people have the ability to pay for housing because they have access to quality education, get paid a living wage in their jobs, and are able to save money for themselves and their families.
I have a vision that government, whether run by Republicans or Democrats, will stop focusing on developing new housing and start focusing on ensuring that people have the ability to pay for housing that already exists.
Green roofs are really nice. But they couldn’t be less relevant to most people. I really wish Governor Abercrombie and Dr. Caraway would at least appear to be more in touch with the lives of the vast majority of their constituents.

I used to see a Yellow Taxi Cab driving around. I still see trees and more parking lots.
Of course there is still that Pink Hotel.

@ADifferentVision,
I don’t think using “green roofs” in Kakaako would be in conflict with your vision of Hawaii’s future. In fact, I bet there is a positive correlation, as it is going to require much closer attention to human needs and a reconfiguration of our current priorities, incentives, if our society is going to provide a decent standard of living for Hawaii’s people. Taking seriously our unsustainable environmental and energy practices dovetails pretty nicely, I would think, this that broader re-orientaion of our thinking.
And I recommend people take the time to Google the phrase “green roof” to see what Caraway is talking about. Check out the online images, too. They awaken a magical dimension in my thinking.

Used to be grass shacks in Hawaii till the missionaries came to preach. Missionaries who built houses out of wood than stone. Then the big bad wolf came along and blew the previous owners into becoming homeless.

Green junk and tree-hugging, we will find out when it’s all said and done, will prove ineffective, outrageously expensive, and, the biggest trick in this senseless effort, unnecessary.
Not even those of the generation the green scare targets is up and supportive of this tree huggingness. Ridiculous. Some of these greenies need to take a shower — that’d help clean the environment
