Lone Harranger says Obama is a radical and a racist, but then goes on to say most people in Hawaii are also radicals and racists so Obama is probably a good fit with Hawaii voters.

Or, we can agree with LH that Obama shares the outlook of most of Hawaii's people and agree that LH's views are very different than ours. I suspect it is he who is an extremist, not us, which is why he is reduced to being alone and harranging us from the distance.

I am haole, grew up in Hawaii and am grateful for having lived in such a cosmopolitan, multi-cultural society. It HAS created a local mindset which is, I agree, different from that of most people on the continental America, especially the "caucasians" over there. And I believe Obama's experience from growing up here has helped forge a consciousness which is more multi-cultural and international in its outlook than that of most Americans, including most African-Americans.

Take a kid with a white mother from Kansas, a black father from Kenya, a childhood in Hawaii and Indonesia, an education at Punahou and Harvard, a few years doing community organizing in South Chicago and you have the potential for a remarkable human being.

I think Hawaii should be proud that Obama is carrying our local culture in the core of his being. I think local people recognize him as one of us, not in a stupid, chauvinistic way, but out of a sense that Hawaii's culture has much to offer this divided and conflicted world.

Lone Harranger,

Come in out of the cold. Relax your prejudices long enough to enjoy what Hawaii's people have to offer. Your spirit needn't be so bitter, your thoughts needn't be so clenched. There is a spirit in these islands which, if you let it in, can warm your heart.

It must be frightening for some right wingers who are so out of touch with reality to see a man who is intelligent,e,g, Obama. So what if his uncle Frank was a communist......everyone is exposed to both internal and external influences, and make their own CHOICES.

What is McCain offering the people of America? How about commenting on this man and his team?

The only thing that most people in Hawaii know about Obama is he grew up here and went to school here. What they don't know is the rest of the story. Obama's Uncle Frank was a card carrying communist and had significant influence over Obama. He lived in Chicago and declared himself a black man not the muticultural person that many of Hawaii consider themselves to be. Sadly Hawaii is a democratic state not because of a well informed populace but because of a made up culture that discourages dissent and free thinking. In a truly free thinking society, we would see autonomy in our legislative body, instead of the herd mentality. We would also see creative ideas that promote individualism instead of government as the cure. We would see an emphasis on responsibility and accountability instead of victimization and blame. Aside from Obamas socialism and radicalism, he may actually be a reflection of what Hawaii is all about, a racist, victimized and democratic state. Thank goodness there are people who are willing to stand up for what is right and what is good.
