A Public Policy Polling survey for Daily Kos, the liberal website, has former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie and Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona in a dead heat in the governor’s race.

The survey was taken on Saturday and Sunday among 1,326 likely voters statewide. The margin of error was 2.7 percentage points.

The horserace:

Abercrombie (D): 49%
Aiona (R): 47%
Undecided: 4%

The poll also found that President Obama’s job approval rating — 53% — had slipped from other polls taken earlier in the year. Gov. Linda Lingle’s job approval rating was 46 percent.

Did PPP poll outside of Hawaii CD01 (urban Honolulu)? I got the impression it was the same pool of voters as the numbers for the Hanabusa-Djou race. I would think Duke needs to win Oahu by a decent margin to off-set the Democratic advantage on the Neighbor Islands.

Okay, I saw the raw numbers provided by Daily Kos– approx. 1300+ in the Gov. race and about half that number in the CD 01 poll, so I’m assuming the Gov. numbers reflect a “statewide” pulse.

It appears the small undecided number reflects strong feelings for both candidates. It will be interesting to see who can convince the ainokea 4% to side with them.
