A list of notable politicians and community leaders praised Kirk Caldwell today as he begins the confirmation process by the City Council for the city’s No. 2 spot as managing director.

Caldwell will face a less friendlier crowd, the City Council, during committee meetings next month with some members likely to question his relationship with the mayor and his political ambitions.

Here are some who turned up  and what they had to say this afternoon at the City Council chambers in Honolulu Hale:

State House Speaker Calvin Say: “Kirk is dedicated to public service. Kirk has a deeply felt mission to better our community and its people, especially those who are less fortunate. Many people have a similar desire, but Kirk’s commitment to the public good is the highest among the people I have known. He could be earning much more money as an attorney. Instead, he has chosen to assist you and the mayor in serving the people of the City and County of Hawaii.”

State Attorney General Mark Bennett (a Republican; Caldwell’s a Democrat): “It’s easy to work with somebody who’s on the same side of the aisle. I think it’s a true test of a working relationship and the quality somebody brings to bear when they are matters on which you disagree. I found that Mr. Caldwell, on all the matters that I have had to work with him … that Mr. Caldwell brought integrity, honesty and willingness. I think Mr. Caldwell brings to the table all of the qualities necessary to well serve the City and County of Honolulu.”

Randy Perreira, executive director of Hawaii Government Employees Association: “I’ve had the good fortune of knowing Kirk for 40 years. The city needs a managing director that is capable of handling the day-to-day affairs of the city. He is very capable and would be a good servant for our community.”

And Hawaii’s top politician, U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, who happens to be Caldwell’s former employer wrote this: “I support him fully and without reservation. … I hope you will give him a fair opportunity to join the City’s team, as you all work together to weather these difficult economic times and plan for a more positive future.”
