Voting ends Friday

Time is running out to cast your vote in neighborhood board elections — the deadline for voting is 11:59 p.m. Friday night.

For the second-straight election, the city’s Neighborhood Commission has chosen to hold the elections through online and telephone voting.

Officials say the turnout already has exceeded 2009, when 6 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot online. As of Monday, the participation rate was 6.6 percent.

“We are pleased by the increase in the voter turnout rate and are hoping that our public relations efforts in the final week to get out the vote will push participation even higher,” Commission Executive Secretary Tom Heinrich said in a news release.

Election officials estimate the savings from the paper-free voting method at about $85,000.

Access to the Neighborhood Boards election can be found at http://www.honolulu.gov/nco or by calling toll-free (888) 907-6717.  Voters will need their pass code distributed by mail at the beginning of this month.

It’s really worth your time to vote in this. Effective NBs provide oversight and a community forum.

    Thanks for the reminder.

I dunno if Political Radar (either of you cats, DePledge and/or Reyes) managed to see some Korean (let’s hope it’s South-based, yuk yuks) campaignin’ goin’ on ‘long Keeaumoku. Whomever’s campaigning, they’ve decidedly taken the local-flavored holding-of-signs on the sidewalk, but, all in Korean (Hangeul) characters those signs have.

And admittedly, it seems ONLY Korean folk are doing the campaigning if I’m overhearing their conversations correctly. Two Korean politicians, apparently, vying for some office. Lot of flower motifs involved. Lot of yellow color (it’s true) strewn around. Lot of campaigners seen jaunting ’round Keeaumoku area. What? Local politics got so haphazard, we allowing candidates from other countries to run here? Surely can’t be for an election in S. Korea, campaigning to encourage the appropriate nationals on how to cast their vote ‘cross the sea. Think you Political Radar dyn’ duo can check that out (unless I missed something in this hea blog)? Where’s the birth certificate (ehy, ehy, joke, OK?)

I wonder if it’s time to have a serious discussion as to whether or not the neighborhood boards are still a vital (if they ever were) and vibrant link to the community especially in light of budget deficits in the millions and millions.

If any other election drew less than a seven percent turnout, it would be deemed a disaster. In the case of the neighborhood boards, the city is pleased with this number.

Japanese Yakuza. Chinese Triads and Tongs.
Mafia is not of Italian origin in Hawaii.
    Neither are they a threat.
