It’s been a while between blog entries (again … *sigh*), so here are a few quick updates on what I’ve been up to, as usual presented in handy-dandy bullet point form:
- Today is the final day you can vote in my Cel Shaded mug poll … and let me just say, it’s been much more hotly contested than I imagined it would be. (It also gives me a good look at who’s reading what we have to say … thanks for reading, everyone across this great country of ours!) Looking at the stats Micropoll generates for me, Hawaii is staunchly pro-whimsical, but voters in the continental 48 are pushing the vote in favor of pro-professional. Which faction will reign supreme? I really think it’s too close to call at this point. So vote now.
- I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on Tuesday. Wasn’t the best film I’ve ever seen — that title still belongs to Toy Story 2, My Neighbor Totoro, Mr. Holland’s Opus or Terminator 2: Judgment Day, depending on which day you ask me (or I could give you yet another film entirely) — but it definitely had its charms. If you’re reading this blog, I think you’d enjoy it, too, for the following reasons: Ninja Ninja Revolution, the Final Fantasy II (U.S.)/IV (Japan) bass line, Scott’s Astro Boy shirt, the fight with Matthew Patel, and all the nods and homages to video game culture and Bryan Lee O’Malley’s original Scott Pilgrim graphic novels. I can see why the film didn’t do better– I think we hipster graphic novel fans can overestimate how properties resonate with wider audiences and the general public — but it’s a giggly geek fest for those of us who actually do “get it.” Check it out locally at Consolidated Ward and the three Regal sites (Windward Mall, Pearl Highlands, Dole Cannery) before, umm, you can’t.
- Yes, the August/September Manga Movable Feast, in which the MMFers take on Yotsuba&! Something Else!, is going on as you read this. Yes, I’m working on something for that in every free moment I have … I hope hope hope hope HOPE to have part, if not all, of what I’m working on posted sometime between now and Sunday. If you need a sneak preview, though, just realize that Yotsuba&! is one of the Five Things We Love profiled in Friday’s Star-Advertiser. And then take a look at a classic Drawn & Quartered column that covered kids’ manga from June 2009, with Leave it to PET! and Ninja Baseball Kyuma.
Keep watching this blog this weekend for more updates. And thanks for reading. Still.
