Word life: Basic mug-anomics

Those of you who saw today’s edition of Cel Shaded in print may have noticed that we finally rolled out my new columnist mug. There are still a few glitches in the system here and there — the old mug still appears on the front cover today, as well as online — but for those of you who didn’t get an opportunity to check out the paper, here’s my new look (and the full, uncropped image, to boot):

Credit for the new picture goes to staff photographer Bruce Asato. Thanks, Bruce!

As you can see, this new look is 100 percent professional. Those of you in Hawaii may want to blame my mainland readers for how the vote on my new column mug turned out — while “whimsical” had a healthy lead locally, the votes from the continent were enough to push “professional” to a slim, two-vote victory. I won’t say which option I preferred — that’ll remain a secret between tag-team partner in fandom Wilma J. and myself — but I was ready to go with either one.

For those of you who miss the whimsy, though, I did build in a little creative touch, albeit one that can’t really be seen in the way the picture’s cropped. (It was either show the book I’m reading, or show my face. You can tell which one won out.) Note the manga:

It’s Case Closed vol. 32, prominently featuring Conan Edogawa on the cover. A character who wears glasses. Like me!

… okay, so that was kinda cheesy. But it works, right?
