Honolulu-chu, Nintendo chooses YOU!

Amazing that something once so highly coveted can be described as "old-school" today.Confession time: My knowledge about  cards from the Pokemon Trading Card Game is sadly outdated. Just look at the image I’ve picked to illustrate this post for proof: a rare Charizard holofoil card from the very first series. The last time I checked in on the franchise, some of the newest cards available that I wanted were of Marill and Azumarill, the former because, c’mon, Marills are so downright cute, the latter because it reminded me of an avatar that one of my friends was using on her LiveJournal page at the time. But I’ve been out of the game for a really long time. And since I have yet to hear about anyone financing their child’s college education on a stack of first-edition Charizard holofoils, I can only imagine the market is nowhere near what it was in the past.

But no matter. I’m all about spreading information, and this certainly qualifies as such. I got this in my inbox a bit too late for this week’s Cel Shaded — which, in case you missed it, was a continuation of the gift guide concept with suggestions for otaku-related books, please check it out — but it’s worth noting nonetheless: the Pokemon City Championships, an officially sanctioned Pokemon Trading Card Game event, is being held starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at Da-Planet, 1432 Kapiolani Blvd., 2nd floor. This Premier Event is the first step on the road to the World Championships next August at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, and players can use it to build their premier ratings.

To those of you going to this event on Saturday, have fun. And for anyone who does attend, please tell me: Does anyone ever use this Chansey card anymore? I seem to remember it being a big part of the strategies in the old Pojo’s Pokemon magazine … back when they were still publishing, of course.

Before 2001.

… great googly moogly, I feel old.
