Many University of Hawaii football players of the 1970s lost a beloved friend and teammate when Ashton Whitby died recently after a long illness. Whitby, of Galveston, Texas, was a defensive back and student assistant at UH.

“The only blacks at UH were athletes. Many found AC’s dorm room the place to hang out with the familiar,” Clark said. “AC represented home to the homesick. He was a fantastic player and teammate, and an anchor who never turned down anybody’s request for help.”
