Questions and answers

Q. “Akuman” asked on Friday, “Who beat Alabama?”, in reference to the week after the 2003 Hawaii-vs.-Army game.

A. Hawaii beat Alabama, 37-29, at Aloha Stadium on Nov. 29.

Q. “BlueHawaii” asked on Friday, “why the heck are we playing Charleston Southern again?”

A. Yes, when this game was booked a couple of years ago the question was “Why?” And Charleston Southern got a better guarantee than most FCS visitors to Hawaii. But UH may need a team it can handle upon return from a 2-game roadtrip at Army and Colorado.

More Q and A to come later today. Ask away.

  1. Hank Chapin:

What did quarterback Moniz apologize for when he addressed the UH football team?

  2. Dave Reardon:

Moniz committed a transgression that reflected poor judgment and could hurt the team That’s why he went on leave for spring practice, and that’s why he apologized.

For me to print the reason publicly would also be poor judgment. There are other innocent people involved who would be hurt by publicly releasing the information, and, in this case, that consideration outweighs the newsworthiness aspect. It would be journalistically irresponsible.

I can tell you it was not a legal, health or academic issue.

  3. roysan16:

In addition to NCAA random drug testing (mandated) do the Warrior football players also undergo additional testing (in house, internal) by the school/ or coach?

Can you elaborate on why Lane isn’t no longer part of the team?

  4. Its over:

Isn’t this year’s Charleston Southern game the result of Herman Frazier’s
    2007 Season scheduling fiasco?

    Where do babies come from???

  6. Its over:

Who (the hell) does Virginia Hinshaw’s hair?

  7. Its over:

Without divulging the nature of Moniz’s transgression(s), have they been fully resolved to the point of forgiveness amongst all parties?

  8. Its over:

Are beauticians regulated in the State of Hawaii? If so, is there a way for a member of the public to file a complaint against the person who does Virginia Hinshaw’s hair.

  9. longboarder:

Dave, I like this topic of having Q/A. I hope that readers can remain civil and tactful during the process. It is not often you can ask questions of someone who knows more then your average sports fan.

    My question…

    1. We saw what happened to Bob Nash. There is speculation that going into his 3rd year Coach Mack is on the hot seat. If he were not to produce a winning record could we be seriously looking at a change for next season?

  10. Its over:

Further to what longboarder wrote, will Coach McMackin’s fortunes have any effect on Virginia Hinshaw?

For that matter, what if any effect will the fortunes of UHAD in general have for her?

  11. Dave Reardon:

Just got back from some errands. Will address questions shortly.

  12. Dave Reardon:

re 3. This was mostly due to not meeting an academic standard.

I’ll have to double-check this, but I think all UH student athletes are drug tested upon enrollment. The NCAA does random testing and testing at NCAA championship events.

  13. Dave Reardon:

    4. Yes, it can be inferred that this year’s Charleston Southern game is due to the 2007 scheduling problems; since UH had little leverage while trying to fill out 2007 so late, Charleston Southern had a good bargaining position.

  14. Dave Reardon:

    5. I don’t know, but they’re all at Safeway today, and they’re screaming.

  15. Dave Reardon:

    7. Supposedly.
6 and 8 … What does that have to do with sports?

  16. Dave Reardon:

    9. If UH doesn’t have a winning record this year, I think there will be an effort to raise the $2.2 million that would be needed to buy out the final two years of his contract.

  17. Dave Reardon:

    10. Yes on the football team’s success especially, since the current athletic director, Jim Donovan, was not around when McMackin was hired and there’s also a new UH president.

Also, since Hinshaw was such a strong supporter of the recently passed student athletics fee, she will be linked to athletics and its financial success or lack thereof more than most chancellors.

  18. Jack Flash:

Do you know if there’s free WiFi in the stadium parking lots? I’d like to bring my computer during tailgating to keep track of other college football games.

  19. Aaron:

jackflash i think there is a roadrunner speedzone near gate 7. i think you need a roadrunner login/password to access it.

  20. Dave Reardon:

re 18, 19: I just spoke with Deputy Stadium Manager Lois Manin. She concurs that there is a Roadrunner Speedzone in the parking lot.

  21. mac fan:

    Dave,
Who do you think wins the starting QB position this season? Also, do you think the UH defense will be better this year? Last, what the heck is up with the love fest with June Jones and some of the warrior football fans? The man up and abandoned this program right when the program was gaining the momentum it needed to turn the corner to the next level.
I really dont give two sheets about the man anymore!!!

  22. Dave Reardon:

    21. Moniz will start, but I don’t think at least one other quarterback, probably Austin, will also start some games. Yes, the defense will be better. There is more depth up front, and the secondary is the best since the Milhouse, Elimimian, Hyrum Peters days of 7 or 8 years ago.

June Jones will always be a polarizing figure in Hawaii. But there is no denying he knew what he was doing while coaching the Warriors.

  23. Dave Reardon:

whoops, not ” I don’t think at least one” … should be “I think at least one”

  24. Jon Stewart:

I don’t understand the reasoning about reporting on the apology of Bryant Moniz–that innocent people would be hurt and newsworthiness. Journalists every day report on matters that hurt innocent people. His apology, you say, wasn’t legal, health, or academic. That points to NEWSworthiness because is transgression sounds like something new, something we haven’t heard much before. That’s news. I might agree with your judgment not to publish anything if it were the often-heard problems like poor GPA, high ankle sprain, fight in a nightclub. But this sounds newsworthy.

  25. mac fan:

    Folllow up to 21.
I heard Darrick Branch on the radio after the Navy game saying that Moniz reminded him of Garrett Gabriel. I disagree. I think Moniz still has a lot to learn in executing plays and does not have the confidence and field generalship that Gabriel had during his tenure.

Do you think Moniz will be able to elevate his game to that of Garrett Gabriel after the whole spring practice fiasco? Also, is he (Moniz) even doing anything during the off-season to elevate his game? The only thing I heard that he was doing was working as a beach boy.

    Please tell me i’m wrong…

  26. protector:

    mac fan on #25,

Garrett Gabriel is associated with UH’s land-mark wins over BYU. Problem is he was a very average player on a great team. Some of my friends have supported him by saying he was injured; that’s possible. In games, he seldom made good judgements on when to run. Aside from the BYU games, he averaged less than 200 yards against opponents and in big games against UTEP, Wyoming (I think) in which UH got walloped, he averaged less than 80 yards. Moniz is head and shoulders a better player than GG was except he doesn’t have the noteworthy game to show for it yet. This may be the year. Gabriel threw a lot of crappy passes in the BYU games, but the receivers bailed him out by making fingertip-catches, diving for overthrown balls, etc. In addition, Moniz has great humility whereas GG was an arrogant, cocky SOB on campus. This is not hearsay; I was on campus when he was there-le6t’s say he had an inflated sense-of-self that was undeserved outside of the BYU games.

  27. Dave Reardon:

    24. Jon … If this were a life-and-death issue and not sports, then, yes, maybe reporting the reason would be newsworthy enough to embarrass and perhaps cause other harm to innocent people as “collateral damage.” But that is not the case.

  28. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Gee. maybe Jon should have his sins publicized as well.

  29. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

My question: Who schedules games – the head coach or the Director of Athletics or do they work together?

  30. Dave Reardon:

    29. Cap … AD Jim Donovan schedules games, with assistance sometimes from Associate AD Carl Clapp, and input from football coach Greg McMackin.

  31. roysan16:

Do you think the Warriors not having a true wide receivers coach will have a negative impact on the wide receivers?

Do you think when recruitment time comes around and potential WR recruits look at whom their position coaches are and seeing that there’s an absence of a real WR coach at UH do you think this may sway them to look elsewhere?

  32. roysan16:

What’s the story behind the former S&C coach leaving? Fired? Resigned? Demoted? Left UH on his own to take the opening at SMU ?

Also when I heard Coach Mack say with the hiring of Tommy is that the program wanted to move in a new direction is that to suggest that Coach Mack was unhappy with the way Mel was handling the S&C for the Warriors?

In your personal opinion watching the Warrirors the last couple of seasons would you say the conditioning of the players, especially in game times, suffered or was adequate?

  33. Dave Reardon:

    31. What makes you say they don’t have a “true” wide receivers coach?
You’re saying Mouse Davis is not a “real WR coach”? What’s your definition of one?

    32. That all depends on who you talk to. McMackin says he let him go, DeLaura says he left on his own. I don’t really think it matters much either way.
I like that Tommy Heffernan has a bigger role with the football team’s S and C. I think he’s very good at motivating the players to work out and it will eventually make a difference in the wins and losses, if not this year, in the future.
I don’t think the strength and conditioning was very good the past few years. That contributes to injuries and second-half fades.

  34. Dave Reardon:

However, it should be noted that the 2007 team and earlier squads that had DeLaura as S and C coach did often win games in second half, often in fourth quarter and OT.

  35. roysan16:

Ty for the answers Dave. One more. What’s the story with the replacement of the field turf at Aloha Stadium. Last year players complained of infections and hard surface etc. Last year I thought they were talking about replacing the field turf in time for this season?

  36. roysan16:

In year one of the Coach Mack regime one of the most successful plays for the Warriors was QB under center, with an empty backfield, and the QB either dropping back to pass for quick out pattern or running behind the strength of Estes. I mean I watched them in this formation, especially running behind Estes, and the play always netted a nice gain. Then in year two I didn’t see the coaching staff run this play at all. Why? And does this make sense, especially when the team has a highly touted center to run behind? I can’t understand why this play was excluded in year two, and was curious on your thoughts?

  37. Dave Reardon:

    35. Replacement is scheduled for after this season, according to Ferd Lewis’ recent article.
    36. Nick Rolovich was calling the plays most of last season. Different play callers have different ideas about what they like to call. Perhaps he didn’t want to go with plays that would put the quarterback in a running situation.

  38. Seawalker:

Dave, if Coach Mac needs to win this year, why didn’t he go with Masoli? The kid is so much better than the bunch of QBs we currently have. It doesn’t make sense to me. Any true college football fan who remembers what Masoli did for the Ducks in the regular season and in the Rose Bowl knows this kid has got it. Moniz was forgiven for his transgressions, but how about forgiving Masoli for his mistakes off the field, too? Come on, we were all naive 22 year-old punks once upon a time. Imagine how much better Moniz could be sitting on the bench watching a true PAC 10-caliber player perform.

  39. Dave Reardon:

    38. My column of July 18 addressed this topic.
    http://www.staradvertiser.com/columnists/furtherreview/20100718_masoli_might_play_in_hawaii_this_fall_but_not_for_uh.html

At least he’s not on a team UH is going to play.
Although I don’t like what Moniz did, it seems Masoli has made more mistakes, including two involving crimes in the past year.

  40. jeff:

When u say winning record what is number GM should shoot to get to save his job? would 8-5 or7-6 be acceptable? to me anything less would be very dissapointing.

  41. dreardon:

    40. I think he’s safe as long as gets into the Hawaii Bowl.

  42. Thanh Averitt:

The layout is what really caught my eye, then the i looked at the writing and i think you did a very nice job. Good work:)
