Majam making the best of it

If you didn’t know it, there’d be no reason to think Kelly Majam had recently undergone surgery for thyroid cancer.

She was cheerful and optimistic as she spoke with reporters today about her recent ordeal. She looked like the same person who led the University of Hawaii softball team to the Women’s College World Series a few months ago, pacing the nation with 30 home runs as a freshman.

During the surgery, doctors determined the cancer had not spread to the lymph nodes. That is a huge positive.

She’s already looking forward to joining her teammates for fall workouts (might not participate right away) and working on cancer awareness issues.

“This is a success story,” she said.

See our story in breaking news for more. Jason Kaneshiro and I will also have stories on Majam in tomorrow’s print edition.

She truly sounds like an amazing person. Hope her recovery continues to be a success. How proud we should be of a student athlete such as Majam representing our university.

I hope the best and fullest recovery for Kelly. I’m pulling for her. If the antidote to her recovery is doctor’s care and many prayers then I sincerely add mine.

I almost had an accident when I heard the news on the radio! Knocked the wind completely out of my gut…

Saw her on TV and marvel how strong she is. I am so glad that she has battled back strongly and that the prognosis is good for a complete recovery.

Mahalo Kelly and many prayers for a speedy recovery! You are truly a Wahine Warrior!
