Letter from a fan

can someone please write an article entitled “Who is going to step up for Coach Mack”?
>
> Coach Hawkins is definitely on the hot seat this year, and his players came through for him in a “must win” game.  I still think that Colorado is a mediocre team in the Big 12, and that Hawaii had many opportunities to beat them (heck, Hawaii had opportunities to beat USC).  But that’s besides the point.  Like Hawkins, I believe that Coach Mack is on the hot seat this season.  So, who will step up for Coach Mack this season?  Which players are going to play (with heart and perseverance) for their coach, and win those “winnable” and “must-win” games?
>
> I’m looking at this offense and I’m thinking that there is so much talent on that side of the field.  So, is it the coaching that is lacking?  There seems to be a lack of creativity on the part of the offensive coaches (especially when calling red zone offense plays —- what about naked bootleg, power I with Jake Heun at Fullback, option with Austin).  It is hard to believe that the O-line can’t push back the opposing team for a 1 or 2 yard gain (that;s pretty pathetic).  It seems a waste to not get Green and Dimude into the offensive schemes (more running plays, screens, shovel passes).  You have these 2 talented RBs, and they are mostly used for blocking.
>
> Not sure what is going on with the defense.  I thought that the defense was supposed to be ahead of the offense after fall camp?  Again, is it the players or the coaching?  The D-line isn’t set (heck many times the linemen are running onto the field while the opposing team is snapping the ball).  Tackling is horrible (players not wrapping up).  LBs are not filling the gaps; missing assignments.  DBs letting receivers get behind them.
>
> Sorry, I digress…  it’s just frustrating.  seems like the Warriors are under achieving.
>
> So, who is going to step up for Coach Mack?

  1. longboarder:

I think the fans need to step up. Buy a ticket and go to the game. So Coach Mack can count on me and my 3 friends.

I’m interested to see how many students show up being that this is the first game that they can get in as a benefit of their student fees.

Get a rowdy (perhaps juiced) crowd up and build a great college atmosphere. Maybe the players will feed off the fans and “as a team” they WILL ALL step it up.

I know my words can be wishful thinking but I really do not think that there is an easy answer to the question in the post.

As a fan and supporter, Charleston Southern, LaTech or USC. I’m there.

  2. puuloke:

Offense: Love the passing game until we get to the dead zone. Wouldn’t be too bad if this was a new recent problem, but it’s gone on way too long – that’s coaching, and play calling. How about surprising somebody with a double tightend, full house back field just once?

Defense: Tough to develop a run stopping defense when our best offense is a passing one. Very evident against Colorado that our defense does not have enough experience (practice?) working against the run and zone blocking. A little more practice with our running game could help both offense and defense – we sure have enough talented running backs. Our pass oriented coaches our hurting our team!!!!!

  3. kev-1:

longboarder – sure, the fans are the problem. I don’t think so. UH has played one home game and there were lots of fans. A teams performance dictates how many fans will be in the stands, and that’s just the reality of it. I agree that fans need to support the team, but how can you justify buying a ticket to a UH game to the father of three who can barely afford his rent when UH puts forth disappointing performances and underchieves year after year?

Personally, I am very excited about this offense and don’t think coaching is bad on that side of the ball. I agree there needs to be more creativity in the play calling in the redzone. The endzone is only so deep, where are all the recievers supposed to go? The linemen said they couldn’t get a push on the dline in Colorodo at the goal line because they were shooting for the knees (which they were if you check the tape). If that was the case, why not delay your push, hesitate after the snap and send Green over the top? Everyone knows that our o-line can’t power run the ball. Alex needs to leap over the line. Or run play-action or something.

With that said, I am still high on this team and am hopeful they fix it. I have a good feeling that Aranda is the right guy.

  4. kev-1:

AND TACKLE FOR _______ SAKE!!!!! I know I would probably end up in the hospital, but sometimes I feel like I could put up 100 rushing yards against our D.

    Okay, maybe not.

  5. Pomai:

    #4 – kev-1 I’d buy a ticket to see that. LOL

  6. kev-1:

Pomai – I think you would get your moneys worth (or laughs worth) just by seeing me trying to move around in a football uniform, pads and all. Envision the short, fat kid whose uniform doesn’t fit that great trying to run with the ball but can’t breathe because he’s wheezing and his helmet is rattling around his head. Then throw in the linebacker laying him out.

Maybe I should show up at practice and make an offer to Coach Mack. I’m sure the players would love the opportunity to level someone they are ten times faster and stronger than. They could use the laughs too. And then we could video tape it and play it on the jumbotron at the stadium during the game. Instead of fans making bets about which colored dot will win the race on the scoreboard, they can make bets on how many yards I’ll get, or if I’ll get up after being hit.

  7. puuloke:

Just re-read my comment. Sounded idiotic, but at my age that’s not unusual. I meant that the coaches hurt the team when they have no creativity in the redzone.

  8. spamworld:

Is it really the scheme that is the cause of the red zone problems?
It seems clear to me that it is execution. We don’t need all these special trick plays down there. Just 11 guys ALL doing what they supposed to do. THAT WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM!

  9. empty:

Just bring in your biggest, strongest guy and give um the ball. He should get one yard in three tries…. the refrig theory…

  10. CPC4EVA:

RnS Team 101 score quick and get big lead, force opponent offense to pass (one dimensional) utilized zone blitz schemes with speed (RUSH D???, LESS TALENT, UNDERSIZED) pressure QB and create turnovers!!!
Oh yah and to the coaches KEEP IT SIMPLE! Players are student athletes… not in the pros!!!

  11. makauhe:

Macklin and the entire UH football team are BUSH LEAUE. Always were, always will be. Go to a Division 2 and use OUR head earned taxpayer’s MONEY on academics, starting with more teachers. How many can be hired
on that useless fat tub Mac’s salary?

  12. Warrior4life:

I agree with longboarder. The fans need to step it up also! We were at both Army and Colorado games and the atmosphere there is incredible with ALL the fans wearing the school colors…not like most of our “fans” do at our home games wearing red, pink, blue, purple etc…most of our “fans” are there cheer only to beat the spread! Now THATS pathetic! Regarding Kev-1′s comment about the father of three not being able to afford tickets, I agree with you too however the “fans” that are attending NEED to step it up so there is a definite home field advantage!

As far as coaching, well I’ll keep my opinion to myself since I cant do a better job but I know this offense can score in the red zone witness the June Jones era where we’d score over 90% of the time in the red zone so we know it can be done.

Win or lose…we’re at the games supporting the team. I hope others step it up.

  13. Warrior4life:

Regarding makauhe’s reply: I guess you said it all by putting more into acedemics since it seems you cant spell that well…Macklin? Bush Leaue? head earned? Auwe…so shame for post if no can spell…

  14. Papakoolau808:

We went to both games too and Warrior4life is right. Fans have to step it up too. Not only on the blogs and stuff but in the seats as well. Best thing about traveling with the team on the road is that you get pumped up at the games esspecially when your only a handfull of UH fans vs a stadiumful of opposing fans! For me I get off on that *&%! We had a good showing at both games and for what we had there , we were making some noise! It does affect the team the showing of support esspecially on the road. I would expect more at home games! Already booked for the Fresno game and hoping to get to Boise as well. I know not everyone can make it to road games so try to get to aloha stadium if you can! The kids need you there!

  15. Warrior4life:

You got that straight Papakoolau808! Our sections at the Army and Colorado games were a sea of green! Now that’s how it should look in a sold out Aloha Stadium! We looked sharp!

Did you see how the cadets at West Point stood out in their dress whites? And how sharp the student section at Colorado looked in their yellow shirts? Now THATS how it should look at Aloha Stadium!

I know our presence there encouraged the team…Everytime they came out on the field they would point at us and we would respond with cheers which in turn jacked them up! We need that at Aloha so that it will be NO Aloha to the visiting teams!

  16. kev-1:

How do we get more students in the stands? If you look at Army and Colorodo, a lot of their fans are students (I guess at army they have to). There is a different dynamic in the stands at Aloha Stadium. When I went to UH, sure student tickets were cheap, but I didn’t want to sit right below the band (which is where the student section was then, not sure where it is now). I think an effort needs to be made to get more students involved leading up to the game with pep rallies etc. Then again, it seems like the make up of students at UH also differs from other universities across the countries.

I re-read longboarder and Warrior4life and have softened on my stance. Fans do contribute to the energy for the home team, that’s indisputable. But my comments were more aligned with the issues they have on the road, not being able to close the deal, etc.

Still, and always 100% behind our Warriors. By the way, Warrior4life and Papakoolau808, I am envious. I look forward to the days I can travel to away games. For now, I’ll continue to go to the Auwe games.

Ever thought about what separates a great coach and mentor from the rest? And why great coaches get results while other get frustrated? “The biggest MISTAKE most people make about a coach is: They mistake a COACH for a BABY SITTER A BABY SITTER tells kids in a nice way that they need to do what they are told to do in a soft and caring voice as to not upset the child. A great baby sitter will smile when the child is throwing a tantrum. A COACH on the other hand is hired to get the best out of a person. They are not there to smile and tell a person what they want to hear. They are hired to get a result because they care about outcomes and getting the most out of a person. A great coach does not play stupid games with irresponsible people who think they want to get the best from themselves yet fail to show it in their actions. This is why great coaches Drop average players from their team all the time. When ADULTS hire a coach, it is not the coaches responsibility to do the work, run the laps or sweat. That’s what the player does. Coaches see how the player can best suit the game and find their unique talents and gifts, then put them in a position to win. If the player fails to turn up, then a good coach will drop the lazy, irresponsible player in turn for the player with a good attitude who is prepared to put in the work to succeed. Next time you are thinking about hiring a coach, just remember the best coaches drop lazy, irresponsible players all the time as they value their years of hard work, learning the art of what they coach and pride themselves on success. If you want to be a great player in the game of life or business; action, implementation and great communication is the key. “Make shit happen”. Great coaches love great clients or great players on their team.
