Nevada ahead of Hawaii in football polls

Neither is ranked in the AP or coaches polls, but Nevada got more voting points in both than Hawaii. Also the Wolf Pack is No. 24 in the Harris poll while UH is among those receiving votes.
The Warriors went wild Saturday for their fifth win in a row, 45-7 at Utah State. They’re now 6-2 including 4-0 in the WAC and 3-1 on the road. Alex Green rushed for 172 yards and four touchdowns. Corey Paredes intercepted two passes. Big day for Moniz, Salas and Bradley, the defense, and David Graves scores a special teams touchdown.
Meanwhile, Nevada was idle. It just has one loss … but it’s against Hawaii.
Go figure.

Not likely, but maybe to move up a spot or two. Maybe not even after next week. USU and Idaho are pretty bad teams.
October 23rd, 2010 at 4:21 pm
bueller555 so 7-2 (if they beat idaho next week) and a win over #19 Nevada would not be enough for a top 25 ranking? i bet you are wrong.
October 23rd, 2010 at 6:17 pm
They probably take a step up in the rankings and receive some more votes, but not quite there yet. If they win convincingly next week and with some help this team will definitely be in the top 25.
October 23rd, 2010 at 6:50 pm
Boise State would love for UH to be ranked when they visit them on the blue turf.
October 23rd, 2010 at 8:03 pm
Maybe appear at 25 with all the loses today.
October 23rd, 2010 at 8:43 pm
We shouldn’t care about rankings at this point. It’s what we finish that will make this team good, great, or a flop. A lot of the voting is bias for the BCS teams anyway. Should we win against Idaho and then beat Boise at Boise then deserving of a high ranking. But then again, the BCS teams will just say that Boise wasn’t that good anyway. One game at a time and we should be fine.
October 23rd, 2010 at 9:30 pm
Yes, they should crack the top 25 this week.
Cheering for SMU to start winning and make the Hawaii bowl.
October 23rd, 2010 at 9:47 pm
Worthy? Sure. Realistic chance? Nope. This is Hawaii we are talking about. Nobody thinks they deserve anything. Beat Boise and none of this matters. Respect will come.
BTW, did David Graves score the TD or hit the kicker?
October 23rd, 2010 at 9:47 pm
yup, he scored.

You know what? I like Moniz and think he will be deadly next year with another year under his belt. But I can’t help but drool over what it will be like after Moniz is gone to have an athlete like Graves behind center. I hope he continues to develop as a QB and is ready to tear it up once Moniz finishes his run.
Dave, with Graves’ increased role on D and special teams, does he even get any work at QB? Do you think the coaching staff even sees him as a QB in the future? I thought this guy was turning some heads in the off season.
October 23rd, 2010 at 10:48 pm
Kev, Yes, DG still gets work as scout team QB. He’s hard to keep track of at practice, all over the place.
October 23rd, 2010 at 11:09 pm
Gotta beat BSU to get ranked. They’re on the fringe, about 29th last week. Beating a 2-5 team won’t get them in.
Being a great athlete is not enough to play QB in this system. Moniz has so many intangibles that’s hard to quantify. He a student of the game – studies the play book, watches a lot of game film, uses Rolo as a sounding board. He’s cool under pressure, usually making the right decision – who to throw to, with the right type of touch or when to run.
To boot, he has a quick release with decent arm strength. He’s a good athlete with enough escapability to extend plays or run for positive yardage.
Hopefully, Graves or Austin can develop the intangibles to go along with their athleticism to efficiently run this offense.

When I think about it, a top 25 ranking would be nice, but what is it really worth? It’s not like UH is playing for a seed in a tournament/playoffs. Like someone else said earlier we shouldn’t worry about being ranked. As fans we should just enjoy the fact that Hawaii has a very good team this year that is respectable on the national scale. We are privileged and fortunate to be able to support and be excited for a team like this this year.

First of all, I would love us to be ranked after this win, but honestly, I don’t think we deserve it. Why? Of our 6 wins, only 3 of them have winning records. Only Nevada was ranked at #19 when we defeated them and that Colorado game was a horrible loss, from the decision to stay in vegas until the day of the game, impotency in the red zone, and poor 2nd half adjustments. Let me say this, if we had beaten Colorado, and I truly believe we should have then we would deserve to be ranked at this point. If we were to upset Boise State then that’s more than enough. By the way Dave on another topic, I’ve heard coach mack’s reasoning for not going to Colorado right after the Army game, and I don’t buy it, but do you have the honest truth to why we didnt go to Colorado early (not Coach’s reason, but is it the boosters, Boyd Entertainment influenced)? And do you think if we did go earlier, we wouldn’t have been so “gassed” in the 2nd half?

13. It can help recruiting, donations and attendance.
October 24th, 2010 at 6:23 am
Who said that UH stayed in Las Vegas until the day of the Colorado game? They went to from upstate New York to Las Vegas for three full days and then went to Colorado on Thursday.
According to sources quoted at the time, the acclimation time needed to fully adapt to the Colorado altitude was a minimum of ten days and that dozens of other schools do it year in and year out with only a few taking more than three days to get used to the atmosphere. Again, there are no rewind buttons in life so stop munching on the IF ONLYs and WHY DIDN’Ts.
I could see what was going to happen when we didn’t get blown up in the USC game.

We may move to the top of the heap in the “also receiving votes” category.

Hawaii received the 27th most voting points in the AP poll released today. Interestingly, Nevada, which UH beat two weeks ago got the 26th most voting points.
October 24th, 2010 at 11:13 am
Same order in the coaches’ poll, too, and Nevada is 24th in the Harris poll while UH is fourth among others receiving votes.
October 24th, 2010 at 11:28 am
i don’t understand how nevada is still above us after a bye.
and i think if boise can keep getting “respect” for beating up on the lower half of the wac, we should get some love too for beating the upper tier.
October 24th, 2010 at 12:19 pm
@Chawan … Strange,yeah? I’ll be addressing that topic in tomorrow’s column.
October 24th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
looking at the BCS poll too, Nevada is ranked 24th. i don’t understand. i guess their win over Cal was what did it. the rest of their wins weren’t over anyone impressive.
October 24th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
This is Moniz’s year……because of his receiving core. The YAC of Pilares and Salas is unbelievable. Not to mention the threat of Green and Dimude in the back field. Next year, we lose our top 4 slotbacks (Salas, Pilares, Blount and Henry)…plus Bradley on the outside.
Also, we lose our 4 top lineman (Tiwanak, Letuli, Ginlack and Aussie).
Moniz will be hard pressed to put up similar numbers next year.
October 24th, 2010 at 6:54 pm
reno (why call them nevada, they used to be called reno, they in reno) lost to UH, but no one out there that votes cares or took the effort to check out the box score. it’s as if it didn’t happen. what happens in hawaii, stays in hawaii, or doesn’t count on a national level if it is supposed to be in UH’s favor. you heard of east coast bias, well there is an anti-UH sentiment throughout the ncaa. sort of similar to the rest of the world if you look at it. people watch hawaii 5-0 and magnum p.i. on tv and like the shows, but they believe people in hawaii live like how it is on giligans island. freakin unbelievable, no make sense, but it’s true. people in every country (including the u.s.a.) believe we live in grass freakin shacks. no wonder we can’t get the nfl network.

Can’t really get excited about our ranking at this time. It’s the final poll after the bowl games that gives you top 25 bragging rights.
Winning the BSU game is the key , that’ll be our signature win. Say we were ranked now, beat Idaho, then lose to BSU, we’d be out in a heartbeat.
Even if we lose to BSU then win out, including the Sheraton, we should end up in the top 25.
Sure I’d like to be ranked now. More for the publicity than anything else. Top 25 team results are a feature of every college football highlight show. is shown as a ticker at the bottom of most game telecasts and sports reports.
Imagine the look on the faces of Texas and Florida fans when they scream at the TV saying, “how can Hawaii be ranked ahead of us.”

AP voter Mark Anderson from the Las Vegas Review Journal placed Hawaii at #22, and put Nevada at … wait for it … #19! Things that make you go hmmmmm …

After suffering through the von Appen Dog Days, anything else is DEFINITELY more palatable…!!!
Q for Dave…What are the rules for Announcing or
Promoting or Faxing our Scores to as much of the
Coaches and Media…?
For the long run, shouldn’t we advocate for ourselves
if hardly anyone else does ???
There are a few who support us on the national scene
but in order to get up to a higher profile (i.e. Critical Mass), shouldn’t we explore that further, or can we ???
Mahalo for all you do Dave…

28. Aloha … Ferd reporterd that UH sent out an email to poll voters to let them know of Hawaii’s win over Utah State and remind them that UH is 6-2 with 5 wins in a row.
On a somewhat related matter, I’m a Biletnikoff Award voter, and have received nothing from UH promoting Salas and or Pilares. Obviously I know enough about Greg and Kealoha to give them a fair shake in evaluating them without prompting from UH … but if I’m not getting that kind of info from UH that means the other Biletnikoff voters who don’t know about them aren’t getting it either.

Hi Dave…Thank you for your comments…
Observing the “East Coast” and “BCS” perspectives re: Promotion of not only Individual Players but Schools, Conferences, etc…..done CONSTANTLY !!! I think we should rethink or rework our Promotion strategies to be A LOT
more aggressive as they are…
On the other hand, note that when one or a few of their conference members fall on hard times, etc…the comments are quite muted to say the least…Hmmmmm…
Again, Mahalo…
