They filled the house

February 24th, 2011
By

Men’s volleyball player Yuval Katz, basketball player Anthony Carter and football and track and field standout Richard Furtado were formally introduced today as the newest members of the University of Hawaii Sports Circle of Honor.

Furtado was a star in the 1930s and played on the UH football team that went 6-0 in 1935. He threw a touchdown pass in the Rainbows’ 14-0 win over Cal to cap the season.

Katz and Carter were the biggest reasons for sold-out crowds in the 1990s.

“We went from a few hundred to 8 to 9,000 per game, ” athletic director Jim Donovan said of Katz’s impact on volleyball attendance.

Carter had a similar affect on basketball attendance, as he and backcourt-mate Alika Smith led UH to back-to-back NIT appearances and wins over Indiana and Kansas.

Carter, who was just traded from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks, was represented today by Jackson Wheeler, the assistant coach who recruited him to Hawaii.

Befitting his nature as a player and person, Wheeler said Carter told him to acknowledge his UH teammates.

“AC said don’t forget the other guys,” Wheeler said.

My all-time UH basketball starting five: G Anthony Carter, G Tom Henderson, F Bob Nash, F Reggie Cross C Mel Werts. 6th man Predrag Savovic.

  2. che:

I would have to put Chris Gaines as my 6th man but I agree with all the rest.

  3. Dave Reardon:

Rest of my roster would include Chris Gaines, Phil Martin, Carl English, Tommy Barker. Need another big man … any ideas?

  4. Dave Reardon:

Oh, and yes, Alika Smith. That’s six guards, but Savo and English could play the 3 in a pinch.

  5. Mr. B:

What about Trevor Ruffin? Ruffin was better than Alika Smith. ANYONE who makes the NBA is good.

  6. aaron:

I would pick Justice Sueing or Eric Ambrozich for that last big man spot, but most would say that Reggie Cross is more deserving.

  7. Dave Reardon:

Yes, Trevor Ruffin. Could make a case for Tes Whitlock, Phil Lott, Aaron Strayhorn, Reggie Carter, Michael Kuebler. So many good perimeter players have come through Manoa.

  8. bueller555:

    Gavin Smith. Just kidding.

  9. vcamchucker14:

    Alika Smith was awesome!
I hope they give him a gold watch if he gets elected to the Circle of Honor

  10. protector:

I believe a glaring omission is Reggie Carter who later transferred to Maryland and became an All-American there. He could play Guard OR Forward with equal effectiveness and he was far superior to all the Guards mentioned except for Tom Henderson and AC. I would replace Mel Werts with John Penebacker who at 6’2” NEVER lost a jump-ball even against 7 footers. I think in one game he beat out Pembroke Burrows and Artis Gilmore? I could be wrong as my memory isn’t as sharp as it once was.

  11. protector:

George Lett, a teammate of Reggie Carter, also transferred to Centenary and also became an All-American there and the silky-smooth Forward also was one of UH’s all-time best although only oldtimers like me would remeber him& Reggie Carter. Henry Hollingsworth was with them and he became a small-college All-American at Hofstra. I felt he was every bit as good as Alika Smith and probably more versatile. The sad part is that Reggie Carter, George Lett and Hollingsworth would’ve stayed at UH if they had made Rick Pitino (a UH Assistant Coach at the time who recruited all 3, I believe) the Head Coach. UH in its infinite wisdom picked Larry Little of Centenary who had a record of something like 100-33. The problem was Robert Parrish (the “Chief”) was responsible for around 72 of those wins. Compounding the problem is that Larry Little never got anyone as talented as him and his highest profile Center was Tommy Barker, I think. Rick Pitino would’ve gotten us to the Elite 8 (if not the Final Four) as he did with Hofstra and Providence. I’m certain of it. I don’t have to remind you about Pitino’s other more higher profile teams. Pitino was an unmatchable recruiter. UH…colossal blunderers. It surpasses even the hiring of the “Fumbler”

  12. Go Warriors:

That is a solid all time team Dave! I always wonder how the team with Carter, Lett and Hollingsworth would have done. It would have been an exciting team to watch the next year.

  13. Its over:

You have to think about true impact players when you’re looking at all-time teams.

For instance, when an entire offense is designed to get a player his shot, and he has the unlimited green light, that’s a player we should be talking about.

If coach confidence in a player is any indication, there’s Phil Lott, Carl English, and even Savo.

But, if the gold standard is the player for whom an offense is designed, focused and run, then shame on everyone for forgetting ROBBIE NASH!

  14. Nicky Clark:

I think Tony Wells in the middle and Tony Webster at guard deserve mention.

  15. Steve Murray:

Another big man? How about Amis? He’s hot a back to the basket big man but has a complete game.

  16. rainbowbballer:

a reply to the comments by #11Protector, I believe that Rick Pitino, was partly responsible for the NCAA sanctions against the Rainbows. Also, Mr Pitino, doesnt even acknowledge that he ever coached at the University of Hawaii. MY opinion, he did not have the Aloha spirit, would have been a bad choice as head coach.

  17. masteruke:

response to protector; least you forget that Rick Patino was the man that put UH on
probation for recruiting violations. Bruce O’Neal was fired and Patino left for greener pastures. Also as rainbowbballer says not once has he said he coached at UH. Maybe he doesn’t like Hawaii or maybe someone might dig up his crooked dealings as a recruiter if he said he was a coach at UH.

  18. Mac Nugget:

Joston Thomas could really learn a thing or two from Reggie Cross. I believe they have the same body type but Reggie Cross used his big body to post down and score in the paint. He was always in control and patient. Joston Thomas is always out of control an impatient. I think he had 3 offensive fouls called on him last night in less than 5 minutes of play. His problem is that his ego way bigger than his skills. Reggie would be a great personal coach for him.

  19. Mr. B:

Alika Smith WAS NOT “Awesome”. He was good, but not THAT good. AC Carter made Alika Smith LOOK good. Proof that Smith was not that good? Never played in the NBA. Both Carter and Ruffin did.

If they were able to play on the same teams, Trevor Ruffin and AC Carter would have been the dynamic duo – capable of taking on any other pair of guards in the country!

  20. Dave Reardon:

lol … these days “awesome” can mean anything.

  21. lil.s:

remember going to the UH-Louisville game in the Rainbow Classic at the Blaisdell. That Louisville team was literally bowing down to Trevor that night everytime he hit a three.
He set the all time record for 3′s in that game with 33 and finished with I believe 42 points! That was a fun night even though we ended up on the short end.

dont forget Anthony Harris. that dude was a baller as well.

  22. Dave Reardon:

Amis, maybe. Similar to Troy Ostler. Rogue Harris for the all-name and all-tattoo teams.

  23. Lance:

If you’re looking for a team to win, you gotta consider some role players as well. My team would look like this:

Posts: Bob Nash, Reggie Cross, Mel Werts, Bill Amis

Wings: Alika Smith, Carl English, Predrag Savovic, Julian Sensley

Points: Anthony Carter, Tom Henderson, Troy Bowe

    Enforcer: Justice Sueing

    Defensive Stopper: Vincent Smalls

  24. Dave Reardon:

I like that a lot Lance. And I’d be tempted to add a few guys under the same premise:

    Versatile frontcourt guy: Mindaugus Berneika
    Dirty work guy: Trevor Wiseman
Inspirational walk-on practice player: Luke “Rudy” Meyers
Popular local guy and team spokesman: David Hallums
    Sparkplug/moonlighter: Miah Ostrowski

  25. bowlute:

Shawn Bradley called and wanted to chime in with a vote for Tim Shepherd as an “Enforcer”.
