TV or no TV?

March 16th, 2011

>> Hawaii athletic director Jim Donovan says he’ll decide Friday if UH’s second round CIT game will be televised or not.

I think Donovan should not commit to put this game on TV unless and until at least 7,000 tickets are sold. That’s because I think fans should see this team in person to really appreciate its style of play and energy (which it says it gets from the crowd).

But I think he’s going to put it on the tube anyway – partly because it’s going to make money either way. UH already covered the entry fee for the tourney and will just have to pay a few thousand for travel expenses for Saturday’s opponent, which will be  Air Force or USF.

Plusses: Rights fee, access for neighbor islanders and shut-ins.

Minuses: Smaller number of people buying tickets to attend, less of a homecourt advantage for UH, also less revenue from parking and concessions.

>> Also, while we’re at it, what did you think of the Oceanic telecast – technical quality as well as the broadcast crew of Howard Dashefsky and Lori Santi.

>> More from the broadcasting transition wire: Rainbows radio play-by-play man Bobby Curran will not be available for Saturday’s game. He has a prior commitment to work the state spelling bee, which is live 7-9 p.m. Saturday on Hawaii PBS television and is sponsored by AIO, the company that also owns KKEA 1420 AM, the station that employs Bobby. No word yet on his one-game replacement.

“Obviously I’ll miss doing the Rainbows game,” Curran said. “But in the grand scheme of things the spelling bee is also an important and very worthy event. I’m proud to be a part of it.”

I like the team of Jim Leahy and Artie Wilson, but it was a nice change to see Howard and Lori. They did a great job. HD is the bomb!

  2. Dale:

I’m on the mainland. Put it on TV!!! (Or at least the web :P)

  3. KonaWarrior:

Having the game in HD was fabulous. Howard and Lori did fine but am too accustomed to Papa Leahy and Artie. What I did not care for was the cheap looking backdrop that was more fitted for high school games and not a UH level presentation. I would have preferred no artificial background with crowd shots like the way ESPN presents their broadcasts.

  4. Warriorama:

Das and Lori did a fine job, but nothing can beat the warmth of Uncle Jim. This definitely has me hoping that KFVE will be allowed to broadcast UH games again this upcoming season.

  5. NotNasti:

Howard is no Jim Leahey, and cannot wax poetic like Papa Jim. That being said, he called everyone by the right name (Jim keeps calling Zane Johnson Zach Johnson) and didn’t offend anyone, unlike our elder statesman of sportscasting. OC 16′s HD broadcast trumps K5′s low-def cameras. Awesome Picture!

  6. chopsueyboy:

Love the HD. Son in Seattle watched on the web. Trying to contact him for website.

  7. Manoa Mist:

Dave you know I love you brother but a spelling bee?? A spelling bee?? OMG!!
How much more cartoon can this tourney get when UH’s own play-by-play man can’t make the game because he’s announcing a spelling bee?
I admire Bobby for honoring his commitment, but a spelling bee? This is a Big Time tourney, but he gotta go somewhere else?
They tried to get Kanoa to cover, but he has to pick his sister up from the airport. Josh Pacheco is getting a haircut and I think Portnoy ain’t coming because he has to get up early the next day.
Seriously, it just don’t seem like UH basketball without Artie Wilson.

  8. aaron:

no idea how OC16′s broadcast was… because I don’t have oceanic cable (i’m sure i’m not the only person who doesn’t). When Oceanic becomes the full-time tv partner for UH sports I’ll probably have to get the bare minimum tv package from oceanic cable, as I don’t really want to give up my DirecTV.

  9. sportsforfun:

I watched the game online because I don’t have cable. I can’t afford it. Hopefully I’ll be able to see the game live this Saturday. If not, I’ll just go down to the local sports bar, order a few cokes, and watch the game there. Go Bows!!
It was refreshing for me to hear someone else do the play-by-play and color, but I think OC-16 should keep the Dash and Lori duo on the high school games. I like them there. I think they should find two new commentators for the UH games. Just my thoughts.

  10. sportsforfun:

Oh, by the way, if it’s better for attendance and if it’s possible, I think Oahu should be blacked out, and OC-16/K5 air the game on the neighbor islands. Just my thoughts.

  11. sportsforfun:

In a couple of hours, the real madness begins! Gotta go to my mom’s house for all the games. No cable, only internet. :P

  12. jjay:

It should be televised only if a sellout, the fans should come out and support the team, we need a live audience, the Warriors earned it, get to the Stanley Saturday nite!

  13. Mac Nugget:

Dash and Lori did a great job. However, It’s not a Rainbow Warrior broadcast without Leahey and Wilson. Come’on OC 16, get those guys onboard for the upcoming game.

  14. byteme22:

Watched the replay (season ticket holder) and I was very impressed with Lori Santi. She obviously had studied Portland and gave great insight into their game. She mentioned that she had seen their shoot around and knew what to expect from Stohl and Metrovic. When was the last time Leahey or Wilson did that.
IMHO, Papa Leahey needs to retire (like me) and let the young’uns (like Kanoa and Lori) have a go at it. Artie Wilson is also getting old (in more ways than one) and is too opinionated and a homer.
    HD versus K5… no contest!
