Rory (and Jason, not far behind)

I spent a good chunk of the final day of my vacation Sunday watching the final round of the U.S. Open. There was no drama but plenty of drama as Rory McIlroy won going away.

Hard to not root for the guy, especially considering the grace in which he handled faltering at the Masters. LeBron James could learn a thing or two from McIlroy in dealing with disappointment.

I’ve heard the words “arrogant” and “swagger” used in connection with McIlroy, but only in the way he attacks the golf course. With the fans, media and his competitors, he projects humility and respect. I never liked Tiger Woods’ aloof persona, even before his problems. This guy, I like. Seems genuine and sincere.

I also like Jason Day. It’s too early to really tell, but perhaps Rory and Jason can become the new Tiger and Phil … but with Jason giving Rory more competition than Phil did Tiger.

Do you care that neither of the brightest young stars on the PGA Tour are American? Doesn’t bother me.

Rory will never be another tiger, Jack or Arnie. Yes, he played well in the us open, but he cannot match tiger in his early success. Tiger won 20 times in his first 100 tournaments, rory, just 3. You are wrong, rory is aloof too, but he is now trying to be different, but that is not him. Rory will neve be a fan success on the american tour, because he is an foreigner, americans want americans to be successful on the american tour.

You are no innocent abroad. Rory McIlroy has already won over the American golf culture, in the same way that football (or “soccer” if you will) has captured the youth sports culture in the country. And, would anyone who follows the game of golf closely not believe that Rory has the best chance of any current pro of breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record for major victories? America is not the same xenophobic society it was just a generation ago, thank heavens.

    Gotta agree with zippie.
Don’t know about his personality or how nice he is, but Rory has the smoothest golf swing I’ve seen in years. You cannot take away the fact that he gave the world’s best golfers their worst spanking in the history of golf majors. Worst than any spanking Tiger ever gave them.
As long as Rory don’t get married to a former Swedish nanny he looks all good.

This kid put on a clinic this past weekend. He dominated from start to finish. The way he handled himself after adversity at the Masters showed he has a lot of class. The way he handled himself after dominating success at the US Open also showed a lot of class. His popularity will continue to grow, no doubt.
