Saturday Night’s Not Alright … Poll Shakeup
By dreardon
Today’s column on fighting at Aloha Stadium during the UH football game generated a lot of reader comments. Also some emails that I’ll post later. I spoke with stadium manager Scott Chan this afternoon. He said obviously safety is the biggest priority at the stadium. He is reserving additional comment until he gets a chance to meet with the stadium’s head of security, Andrew Chang.
Thank you to Blake Tolentino, who was in the stands and saw the entire incident from close range and provided me with information about it.

Here are the polls. Unbeatens Oklahoma and Wisconsin fall to Texas Tech and Michigan State. Since I’ve been instructed to strongly consider face-to-face meetings when voting in the Associated Press poll, I’ve got the upset winners above the teams they beat, at least for this week. You win, you deserve that. Now, in doing that, I ended up putting Wisconsin below Nebraska, which it soundly beat a few weeks ago. I may catch heat for that, but so be it. That game was about a month ago and Nebraska is much improved.
Here’s my ballot: 1. LSU
2. Alabama
3. Stanford
4. Oklahoma State
5. Clemson
6. Boise State
7. Oregon
8. Kansas State
9. Arkansas
10. Virginia Tech
11. Nebraska
12. Michigan State
13. Texas A&M
14. Texas Tech
15. Oklahoma
16. South Carolina
17. Wisconsin
18. Michigan
19. Arizona State
20. Georgia
21. Houston
22. USC
23. Penn State
24. Southern Miss
25. Cincinnati

Wow, you got Stanford pretty high there. Last week was the first time I saw them look as good as I thought they were going to be.

I think Stanford is legit. Big game with Oregon on Nov. 12, at Palo Alto.

My very senior citizen parents were accosted by a drunk last year at the stadium. They asked him to sit down and the guy went ballistic. I wasn’t there, but cops were asked to do something and they did nothing. If the cops ain’t gonna do nothing then that’s how these fights get started.
Bottom line, my parents cancelled their season tickets after more than 30 years of attending UH football.
It’s just not a family friendly enviornment anymore. It’s the wild west man. It’s expensive and not worth the hassle. We ain’t never going back unless B.J. Penn himself comes with us.

Nice picks. I would flip flop Boise and Clemson, but will say up front that I don’t like Clemson, yet there is something special going on there this year. Boise just bein’ who Boise be! Buster Bronco says ….

3. Sorry to hear that about your folks Manoa. 4. Boise doesn’t only need to win out, but needs Georgia to do so too to improve its NC game chances.

Good column on the stadium fighting which topic should be addressed and solved. I think alcohol should not be sold at the stadium, as you point out some mainland conferences and schools do not allow it.
Also as pointed out by a caller on the Curran radio show today, maybe the stadium gates should not be opened so early; how about 2 hrs. before instead of 5 1/2 hrs. before game time ? People have pointed out that although alcohol is sold at Stan Sheriff Center and at Murakami Stadium, there are no incidents of fighting at those venues. Could that also be related to the more limited crowd numbers and type of fan that attends those events ?

We had that fighting stuff in 2006. They nipped it in the budd with public service announcements from JJ and some of the Polynesian players. Also, the ran a phone number across the scoreboard, at regular intervals, telling you to call this number when you see any disturbances. That way you catch things before they get out of hand. If people feel they can get away with hooliganism (British soccer) then it will continue, if there is consequences, it will stop.
