Austin or Graves? Why not both?

I’d like to see Shane Austin and David Graves both get significant playing time at quarterback against Fresno State, at least early in the game. Not necessarily alternating every play, but perhaps by series and situationally … Austin in third-and-long situations, Graves in short yardage. Then, for the second half, start whoever did better in the first half. Perhaps even run some formations with both on the field.
I don’t think this will happen, at least not this week, since UH wants to go with one clear starter.
I want to see who is better under the bright lights on Saturday night … it’s a lot different than practice.
One other note; if Graves is the guy and he does well and the Warriors win down the stretch, it could be a great boost to UH headed into 2012 since Graves is only a sophomore now. But I’d also like to see Austin, a senior, get some chances to shine at the end of a five-year career where he mostly waited in the wings.

Think the decision was already made when Austin came in for Mo, even with very little game reps. Didn’t understand that move by the Coach to not give Austin game experience with the o-line and receivers.
I think Stump will be the starter next year.

Doesn’t matter who starts as the coaches don’t have a lick as to what to do as they will once again be outcoached as is the usual case in all their losses. This is a hapless bunch of coaches on the sidelines and Mack certainly doesn’t have a clue as to how to make adjustments or what the hey is going in the game and so does his coordinators when the other team make adjustments, both Rolo and Aranda don’t have a clue as to how to counteract those adjustments. I would UH hire the coaching staff at Kahuku, Punahou, Leilehua, and or, Baldwin .

i would like to see both QBs in action. we need 2-more victories to claim a bowl appearance and next year’s heir-to-be at QB, david graves, can use reps as he represents our inaugural season into the MWC.
mac’s public announcement to play one, doesnt make sense, if he plans on coaching here in 2012.
the call on playing time each receives, remains with mac. no argument. but, a one-or-nothing-one-QB selection is simply miopic.

If they are playing both, maybe they should give each QB a half. I would hate for it to have a pre-season feel though, as this is an important game. But ultimately it could be a tryout of some sorts.
I understand the desire to see Austin play because he’s a senior and has paid his dues for a long time. I’ve even lobbied for him to get his shot before too. But I think you need to go with the guy you think might be your future. Especially since it is not so clear cut that Austin is heads and shoulders ahead of Graves. If they are that close and the decision is that difficult, then go with your future. It will be more meaningful in the long run. Now obviously, if Austin were most definitely the better option, then go with him.
BTW . . . I appreciated your column today, even though I think you’re getting a little lashing on the other blog. It is refreshing to read honest journalism.

4. Thanks Kev … I took a look there, and I really appreciate the comments you made there. Takes guts to go against the grain on that blog. I also understand how some fans have a different view of loyalty and what’s important than I do, and have learned to not take things too personally. The one bothersome thing is that some people think I wrote that column because McMackin scolded me in public. That was part of it, but only because he was wasting his coaching time; the things that he was saying to me were actually almost making me laugh and I was trying to keep a straight face. Perhaps I will share them some time.
