HPD says not enough info to investigate UH football for alleged point-shaving

I wish I could say I’m shocked by the allegations, but I’m not. Hopefully there is nothing to it, but I’m afraid there might be. Rumors and speculation have been rampant, especially in recent days. Here’s the Star-Advertiser’s breaking news report. Sadly, much more to come. Update: HPD has released a statement today (Tuesday) that there is not enough information at this time to launch a criminal investigation.

Dave…if you’ve been hearing the same stuff as me, then it’s been happening since the Hawaii Bowl against Tulsa.

  2. bleedgreen:

DR, would Hawaii suffer the “death penalty” by the NCAA if found to be true? This sounds really serious. Way worse than selling or trading memorabilia for tattoos and cash.

  3. satch:

Trust me..there is no validity to this point-shaving incident…its just a disgruntled gambler who has lost monies, probably big monies on the UH and is vindictive and sent the letter in out of spite.

Isn’t this more of a federal type investigation in the 1st place?

So while HPD isn’t going to investigate, I think once the feds get in, things can blow up.

Wasn’t Hawaii’s starting QB under Fred Von Appen caught in Chinatown throwing dice in the late nineties?

You insinuate in your introduction above that there is more to this story than has panned out so far. Are the rumors you allude to from credible sources? Essentially, what we have been told is UH received an anonymous letter early this month claiming point shaving by UH Football players. The letter was forwarded to HPD. HPD determined that there was not enough information to warrant further investigation. UH determined it was necessary to release this to the public. I really don’t see where the story is at this point. The bigger question for me is why UH felt it was necessary to release this information to the public after HPD concluded there was nothing for them to investigate and with UH administration knowing that even the mention of the term “point shaving” could taint the athletic program. Is it their practice to do this in other similar situations? e.g. Anonymous letter of complaint about a professor or administrator engaged in improper/illegal behavior. If it’s later determined to lack information to necessitate any further investigation is the public then notified of all this? I think I know the answer so the real question is why is athletics held to a different standard?

I have read elsewhere that a close relative of a high profile player runs a bigtime gambling organization. If that is true, that is too close to the program. That can only be a problem, whether it be pure rumor or not.

  8. Dan-O:

    #5….yup, Tim Carey.

That UNLV game reminded me of a 12-10 loss at Texas El-Paso during, I think, Bob Wagner’s last, or second-to-last season as head coach. The ex-Waianae QB, like Hawaii’s current signal-caller was the cause of a lot of bad turnovers. If I recall , it was the Miners’ only victory of the season. Until their lost to Portland State, that to me was the program’s most embarassing defeat.

point shaving, throwing a game, etc… call it what you want. I’m not a gambler on UH games but I am a fan of the game. I’ve been vovalizing my concern about 2 players since last season. I record all the games and if you watch Tulsa and Idaho vs Lousiana Tech and New Mexico State you’ll see some differences in stances, motions, and other movements that resulted in bad plays (not wanting to get too specific) I believe something fishy is going on and no, I didn’t send the anonymous letter. I do hope I’m wrong. If these allegations are true it would break my heart.

Let’s face it, with the number of local players we have on the team, there is a huge likelihood that one of them may be related [eh, you know my uncle] to someone involved in gambling. However, I would guess that the likelihood it results in point shaving is very, very, extremely low. If there was something to it, then it would have probably started in high school too and would be easier to trace back to the source via coconut wireless. I do not believe that the player ohana would put up with it, or keep it silent. Let’s have Ian Sample investigate.

    Shocking

Gentlemen, I suggest you read, the Book, “What’s the Matter with Kansas”……then you will understand how people vote against their interests and don’t even realize it…….
