A display of character

Some UH football fans are upset that new coach Norm Chow will remain as Utah’s offensive coordinator for the Utes’ final game, the Sun Bowl on New Year’s Eve against Georgia Tech, before officially becoming the Warriors’ head coach.

This is silly; Chow’s remaining with the Utes is what anyone with any sense of commitment would want to do. Even if Utah were not his alma mater, Chow, like other people with even just a normal amount of class, would just consider this the right thing to do, probably without even thinking much about it. And UH is right in not pressuring him to do otherwise.

It’s a dead period for recruiting anyway. And anyone who thinks Chow is not formulating some plans and building his UH staff in his “free time” between game-planning for the Yellow Jackets and coaching up the Utes hasn’t quite thought this out.

Wouldn’t you rather be welcoming a new head coach like Chow than Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly? Remember how he left Cincinnati high and dry before its bowl game? To me, it’s a sign of character.

I was amazed that Brian Kelly walked away from his players, BCS bowl game and chance for a perfect season. I could understand if the university said leave now but they didn’t.

Norm is doing the right thing. The players want him and he owes it to them to finish what they started.

As you stated, this is a dead period but I’m sure he is working hard behind the scenes.

Wow. Can’t believe Reardon even had to address the subject. If Chow can’t even get started without local grumbling about Chow’s honorable, unassailable sense of duty & responsibility to the players, boss, community he’s about to leave and who bore Chow no grudge for finally achieving his dream — WE’ve lost our way, not Chow. Shame on us. Yet another reason I never listen to “Bobby Curran”, “The Animals” or any “local” sports talk-radio nonsense. Opihi minds = opihi aloha.

#2 “Yet another reason I [ ignore ] “Bobby Curran”, “The Animals” …”. (Did obviously listen-hear enough to know what I should ignore)

Certainly and encouraging news that Norm Chow selected as UH football coach…….long overdue. Quite sure he is building his football organizational team…then team will be public. Will not be surprised if he lures some QBs also, kickers, and special team players. Hoping he keeps Miano, Cal Lee, and Nick Rolovich as part of his team, along with a few others.

    malama our Warriors!

OK… Whose going to be the first to have the “Norm Chow Fun Plate” at their restaurant????
I can only imagine what would be on that plate besides Chow Fun.
Anybody have any ideas of a dish that would be fitting for our new HC?

Agree 100%, also that you shouldn’t have had to point this out, but I’m glad you did.

  7. Manoa Mist:

Just watched the press conference. I only got one question: what took us so long to get this guy? And yes, a winner never quits and a quitter never wins – the truest axiom in sports. Mr. Chow is committed to his team until the season ends. That’s how.

  8. maukaman:

Who to root for…GaTech is coached by former UH O-Coordinator Paul Johnson, and former UH QB Ivin Jasper is the O-coordinator, Future UH Coach Norm Chow is the O-Coordinator for Utah. Well, we can root for them both, but me, I rooting for Norm. Go Warriors.

  9. Hugh Baby:

Manoa Mist, blame Coach Chow’s late arrival at Manoa on one person. Hugh Yoshida! That numb skull bypassed Chow for none other then Freddy Von Appen! Maybe it was the public vs. private school bias! Leilehua vs. Punahou!

  10. johnC:

Right on Mr. Reardon and the post which says it’s sad that you had to bother.

  11. flying pigs:

A couple of things, sometimes when a coach takes a new job before his team is done with a bowl game they are not allowed to be with the team any further because they may “recruit” from their former team or maybe even future recruits. In this case Coach Chow asked and is being allowed to stay with the team. As for the whole Von Appen deal, there seemed to be a lot of excitement when he was first selected with a recommendation coming from Bill Walsh. It wasn’t until after the first year and a half did we get even a clue on what he was going to be like. I hope Coach Chow has all the success everyone is looking for, but after the first season, if he has another losing one, watch how many people start jumping off the band wagon. There are no guarantees when selecting any new coach as we see across the nation how many programs keep changing their head coaches. UCLA, Wash St, Ariz St are all chasing the same dream and paying 3X as much, but that won’t guarantee success, which is what all fans are demanding.

  12. slenzi:

Definitely a sign of character. Oh yeah, and maybe I do want to hear the sports announcers discuss on National TV, on New Years Eve, for 3 whole hours, how and why Coach Chow is going to Hawaii, and how it is a fabulous fit AND how it will bring the Hawaii program back into National Prominence again. He may not be able to visit player homes in the recruiting dead period but thanks to National TV he will be serving notice to hundreds of both decided and undecided recruits that, “Hey, maybe i ought to check out the Warriors’ program!” Sun Bowl = free national exposure for UH and we aint even in it.

This is something that has to be checked even when a person is becoming appointed in a job. There are some people who will try to get a job and hide the fact that they have had a criminal history. The one technique in which a person who is running a business will be able to identify the criminal activities of a job seeker is to get on the Background Check and attempt to ascertain the details about the individual who is an applicant for a job. If you appoint the individual with out the Background Check and he turns out to be a criminal, then you will lose a lot of money and other issues. The individual could steal information from you that affects your company or the individual could steal money from you. Worse than all this is the fact that the individual who is discovered to be a criminal through the Background Check could even kill you. So, for the safety of your self and your business, you have to make sure that you do a Background Check on any individual who applies for a job in your company.
