Does everyone now believe it was the two best teams?

January 9th, 2012
By

Alabama 21, LSU 0.

Alabama No. 1, LSU No. 2.

Alabama National Champion.

1. Does anyone still think Oklahoma State or a team other than one of these two belonged in the national championship game?

2. Was this game as much of a “bad watch” as the first?

***
My final Associated Press poll:
1. Alabama. 2. LSU. 3. Oklahoma State. 4. Boise State. 5. Arkansas. 6. USC. 7. Oregon. 8. South Carolina. 9. Stanford. 10. Wisconsin. 11. Houston. 12. Michigan State. 13. Michigan. 14. Baylor. 15. TCU. 16. West Virginia. 17. Oklahoma. 18. Kansas State. 19. Virginia Tech. 20. Georgia. 21. Southern Miss. 22. Florida State. 23. Auburn. 24. Cincinnati. 25. Texas.

  1. kev-1:

Clearly the two best teams in college football. While I would love to see OkSt’s offense against Alabama’s D, they didn’t belong in the title game.

Not a bad watch at all. When you get to watch defenses that tough, you appreciate the game (for me anyway). Then again, I was for Alabama. Had I been for LSU, I am sure I would be singing a whole different tune.

Dave . . . your thoughts on backup QB (early season starter) Lee not getting a chance in the game? Jefferson seemed a bit high strung, like maybe the game was too big for him, or he was too pumped or something. I thought they should have played Lee for a bit.

  2. bigislandkurt:

Yes, I believe it was the two best teams. Okie state had their chance, but blew it in Aimes. Boise had their chance, but blew on the foot of their field goal kicker. There is no other team in the land that can compare to the strength of schedule both LSU and Bama had. Although it would have been intriguing to watch Boise lock horns with Bama. Personally, I think Bama’s defense would have caused fits for any team that was to play them. Yes, that was one of the best college defenses I have ever seen in my life. People need to understand that LSU is not a bad team. Bama just made them look that way. Even a Honey Badger could not get started.

    BIK

  3. MANOA:

Two best teams– yes. And probably the only two teams in the country that can play like they did like it or not. NFL defenses with college offenses.
But lousy game because it was too much of a defensive game and LSU had only a defense and no offense. Game was not close even when it was 3-0.
Maybe after watching the NFL playoffs and some great college bowls go to OT this was hard to take.

  4. bleedgreen:

It was a good game to watch. Alabama totally shut down LSU. Hard to believe they allowed LSU something like 92 total offensive yards. Sometimes I think the national champ is the team that best adjusts to the 5-week waiting period. LSU might have performed better if there were only three weeks from their last regular season game to the title game. Playing the title game in January is ridiculous.

  5. truegreen:

    Two best teams?
Maybe. Doesn’t matter. The point is, championships are rarely won by the “best” team. That’s why every other sport gets to prove it on the field. Not decided by who humans (and computers who are run by humans) “think” is the best. Be honest, 99.9% of people would still never believe Boise St. deserves to be in any BCS game if they didn’t get a chance to prove it against Oklahoma. Or Utah against Alabama. Or Hawaii…never mind…

Any other team deserve to be there?
You kidding me? Absolutely! You’re not even curious what would happen with an explosive offense against Alabama?

    Bad watch?
Depends. Do you prefer watching grass grow or paint dry?

  6. Chicken Grease:

The dumbest national championship. Ever. Ever, ever, ever. Is it no wonder the BCS (anybody, uh, duh, forgetting that) is changing alla’ sudden after this re-matchup?

LSU scoring 0 points. Like I said in another blog here: somebody call Jesse Ventura or likeness thereof.

No way. No way this was a real game. Heck. Maybe sports gets more money out of being entertainment. Maybe that’s the next step for sports (“be more like pro’ wrestling”).

LSU scoring 0 points. And their coach, not sad or mad, but, smug. No way. No way.

  7. frings:

The big girthed, sweating rednecks from Alabama are all screaming roll tide this morning for their national champions. But, in all honesty, outside of the the confederacy, who cares?

  8. kev-1:

The confederacy no longer exists (I know they believe it does), lets not let them think it does.

  9. dopaco24:

    kev-1,

I don’t think Lee would have been an improvement at all. In his career against Alabama, he had thrown for 1 TD and 7 INT’s. Miles also thought that Jefferson’s mobility was a factor in keeping him in over Lee.

  10. lakesidegt:

    Dave
Yes those were the two best teams.

Going into the BCS game I was cautiously optimistic about Alabama’s chances. I’ve been following them all season because of my Alabama relatives; also after the UH/SJSU game, my wife and I went to Tuscaloosa to watch Alabama play against Tennessee. (next time we go there I’ll try to see the Bear Bryan museum) Like all SEC teams, the Tide has outstanding athletes with great size and speed; but to see them live…we can dream and hope that Coach Chow is able to get recruits like that. The difference in the BCS title game was Saban – he opened up the playbook on offense; the qb is young (I think a sophomore) and Saban’s been bringing him along gradually through the season. Watch out for them again next year.

  11. aukai808:

The truth is we’ll never know. Though Alabama won, they should not have been in that game. They forefeited that privilege by losing to LSU during the regular season. Alabama wanted to play in the SEC championship game. They didn’t because they weren’t good enough to be in that game. Who’s to say Oklahoma State, with the same amount of time to prepare, would not have beaten LSU yesterday? Oklahoma State should’ve jumped Alabama in the final regular season polls. Alabama should have played Stanford, each team not having won enough to win its division and not good enough to be able to play in its conference championship game. LSU did not take on all comers. It took on most of them and one of them twice and ended up splitting with them. Hats off to Alabama for yesterday, and only yesterday. They looked real strong. But not having beaten anyone before yesterday, I still don’t believe they should’ve been able to play in that game.

  12. kev-1:

dopaco24 . . . probably not. Especially the way Alabama’s defense was playing yesterday.

  13. ainokea:

This game sucked big-time. I thought the 1st game sucked too. ESPN promoted this game for the national championship all year even before their regular season game. I would have rather seen OK. St play LSU. I bet there would have been TD’sin the game.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  17. Forsikringsselskaper:

We would also like to express that most individuals that find themselves with no health insurance are typically students, self-employed and people who are without a job. More than half from the uninsured are under the age of 35. They do not think they are wanting health insurance because they are young and also healthy. The income is frequently spent on houses, food, and also entertainment. Some people that do work either whole or in their free time are not presented insurance through their jobs so they go without because of the rising cost of health insurance in the United States. Thanks for the strategies you write about through this site.

  18. ainokea:

It sucked. But ESPN was politicking for this game since mid-season and they got it.

I know sardinia a bit.The video reflect the fact that the access to some spots is tricky with an average car.Localism can be a problem in an island where there is high unemployment and frustration(do not expect to be exactly welcome in the water). The average wind swell period for the mediterranean is 8 at best with occasional 9s and being there at the right time(few hours)is very difficult.Try and go to the costa verde with an average car, it will not be funny, believe me.Infrastructures are not exactly the best, building has been done “hey pal, return me the favor” like style ,but this is countrywide(drive around milan and you will see the results of 40 years of sistematic urban planning scrapping).
