If there is no Pro Bowl …

… we will miss it, but life will go on. Not as we know it for one day in late January or early February. But remember, we survived the Pro Bowl disappearing for a year in 2010. If I remember correctly, the sun did rise again the next day.

Also, if the NFL does suspend or eliminate the Pro Bowl, that doesn’t mean Hawaii shouldn’t try to continue its relationship with the league. If the St. Louis Rams are willing to give up one home regular-season game a year to play in England, how difficult would it be to entice a West Coast team (all of which are popular here) to play in Hawaii? At least a preseason game.

One big obstacle comes to mind immediately: A tough sell considering the current condition of Aloha Stadium.

I spoke with Mike McCartney of the Hawaii Tourism Authority this morning. He said the HTA is still in talks with the NFL to host the Pro Bowl in 2013. “Oh, yes, we’re still in discussions with them and we want the game in Hawaii.”

“We’re negotiating in good faith and nothing has changed since we last talked (with the Star-Advertiser, last month).”

McCartney said latest negotiation discussion was today, and the possibility of there being no Pro Bowl is nothing new.

“That’s just an ESPN report. That has always been a possibility.”

On possibility of other events partnering with the NFL even if Pro Bowl is suspended or eliminated, McCartney said: “There’s no question Hawaii wants to continue its partnership with the NFL in different ways.”

McCartney declined to provide any details on negotiations or possibilities other than the Pro Bowl. “We’ve agreed to work with them directly and not in a roundabout way, and I have to honor that,” he said.

    first?

    If no Pro Bowl,

Could a festival be created to reward players to come to Hawaii
with activities that will allow fans to meet and greet all the all-stars?

chopsueyboy: I like your idea a lot. To expand on that, have a festival of different events for a whole week have a on the field skills contest featuring the all-stars. Also have interactive games for the fans, meet and greet the all-stars, music concerts, prizes, parties, charity golf tournament, etc.. The NFL can chip in with community events like visit the kids at the hospitals, schools and senior care homes, charitible organizations, etc. Also have a Make-A-Wish event where a severly ill kids can spend a day with his or her favorite all-star. Create a fantasy camp where people can pay to go to a football camp run by actual NFL coaches and players and the money can go to charity. Have a whole week worth of events. Everyone wins, great PR for the NFL, the fans have a great time attending a number of different events, the players and coaches have fun while on vacation in Hawaii, the charities make money, and Hawaii wins.

How about a Third Place game between the losers of the conference championships in place of the Pro Bowl? I think it would be a sellout and it would be a helluva game. You could have players from other teams still come and run other events (sign autographs, flag football, charity,etc..)

re: chopsueyboy’s idea re: if there is no pro bowl. He has an EXCELLENT IDEA to create a festival where people can meet with pro bowl stars and participate with them in various events esp. getting the special needs kids involved, also.

  6. madeinhawaii:

Why not just invite the team that wins the SuperBowl for a weed full of relaxation autographing, and Jr events.. Probably a lot cheaper than the amount the NFL wants for the ProBowl.

  7. chopsueyboy:

Use the $5 million we pay NFL and create a reality tv show using Hawaii Five-O production.
New versions of Pro-Am (not limited to golf)
Create Pro-Am with players doing things of Hawaii:

    Learn surfing with a safety
Swim with the Dolphins with a Dolphin (Devonne Bess)
    Horseback riding with a Bronco
    Canoe paddling with a cornerback
Catamaran rides with a “cat” (jaguar)
Deep sea tackle fishing with a tackle
Dinner cruise & fireworks with defensive line
    etc…
Finally, get the Guiness World Record for largest luau
with all players and participants having priority seating and
show highlights of all activities using the big screen at Queen Surf beach

The pro-bowlers put on a shameful performance. It’s no wonder the NFL wants to cancel the game. A pre-season game would be much better.

  9. Bryant Anderson:

My dad and I watched Jim Plunkett face off against Dan Fouts and Ray Werching kick the winning field goal as time expired.
It was 1976, a year after the new stadium opened and from the crowds reaction you wouldn’t think it was meaningless preseason
game. It was the first time I got to see the Niners and I think the NFL should return to Hawaii to play preseason games. Maybe a series of them. Each team could come to the islands for a week, two different teams each week in August. NFC West vs AFC West.
