The Games are underway
By dreardon
I enjoyed the opening ceremonies Friday night, and have watched gymnastics, women’s beach volleyball, weightlifting and men’s indoor volleyball so far. Rowing doesn’t grab me, so when it comes on I check out to something else.
Looking forward to track and field as always, although Castle High product Bryan Clay being out of the decathlon dampens it a bit for me. Also will be interested to see if Roosevelt grad Clarissa Chun, who was fifth in 2008, can medal in wrestling.
As I write in Monday’s column, Clay Stanley was impressive in volleyball’s sweep of Serbia. And the start of the Olympics brings a welcome break from the negative stories that have infested sports locally and nationally lately.
Have you and will you be watching much of the Olympics? And which sports?

Watched some table tennis last night. Had a 16 year old Chinese American girl fighting hard against a top ranked Chinese player. Fun too watch. Tried to watch handball and couldn’t figure out what was going on! Sad to see Bryan Clay in the BMW and the other commercial knowing he’s not competing.

Glad to hear Bryan’s reaction to not making the Olympics recently. Although disappointed, he is thankful for what he has accomplished in his career and he said it is not the result that is most satisfying but the journey. What a class act! I wished all athletes can appreciate and see things the way Bryan does. He said he will be in London supporting his friends and fellow athletes. GO USA!!! It has been a pleasure watching Bryan through his amazing career.

The table tennis kid is interesting. She has some kind of connection to Bill Gates and Warren Buffet and refers to them as her uncles. She’s even played table tennis with Gates. I totally agree about Bryan Clay. He is a great example of how to deal with disappointment.

yeah we are watching our US table tennis player Ariel Hsing too … right now (actually some video we recorded from earlier) she’s playing against someone from Mexico. She’s winning so far. Looks like she’s likely to win it all. Its really interesting.
