The Point of the Matter

Since the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team’s one-point OT loss to Illinois last Friday, I’d been wondering if Brandon Spearman might be the answer at point guard.
So it was interesting to hear UH assistant coach Scott Fisher on Bobby Curran’s show this morning mention the junior starting 2 guard as a possibility as at least a backup at the 1 spot.
Perhaps we will see him at the point a few minutes tonight when UH hosts North Dakota?
I love Spearman’s all-around game. If you move him to the point you can have your best five players in the game: Spearman, Hauns Brereton, Isaac Fotu, Christian Standhardinger and Vander Joaquim.
Maybe it’s OK to continue starting Jace Tavita at the point; there are positive aspects of his game. But especially when you get to end-of-half situations you need a point guard with fewer turnovers, the confidence to take and hit a big shot, and much, much better free throw shooting than what Tavita has shown at Utah (10-for-25) and now at UH (1-for-7).

This is the time to experiment while its still early in the season. Hope we not talking about this in February, unlike the football team :)

Jace has one good aspect of a pg and that’s in the assist column other than that he’s a bit of liability. Had he have the field goal and free throw percentages on his side he’d be an adequate pg. I don’t feel confident with Jefferson @ the 2 either but for his d. He hasn’t shown the shooting touch at the charity stripe, but I gotta say @ least Coach is still trying to figure out his best starters for the game and not so hard headed on who’s to play the pg.

In Crunch time, I’d use Spearman @ the pg and some one other than Jefferson @ the 2 because of his bad ft shooting history. Be it Roop, Jawato, Pavlovic, Harper, etc., I think any of em has a better ft % compared to Jefferson. So if it’s Jefferson @ 2 we may still be where we started from with Jace in Crunch time.

There’s only one man who can get UH thru this Murderer’s Row of a DII schedule at point guard – and everyone knows that man is Sean Schroeder!
Never been a huge fan of the Gibster but have to say I loved watching Spearman play Illinois. That kid has a lot of heart and the Illini know who he is now. He can play point. Tavita can be the backup point guard.
Vander looks good this year man. As for the kid with the fro, get a haircut son.

And whats the problem with our cousins haircut that his extended SAMOAN family can help you with? The fro stays.

  7. Dave Reardon:

He’s actually Tongan. And I think Manoa Mist is joking. Right?

  8. Derrick:

I think you gotta give Spearman some time at point where he will be valuable in a close game with his ability to create his own shot off the dribble. He is also a solid FT shooter and his game has been getting better each time out. Tavita is a liability there.

  9. Manoa Mist:

The Mist is Polynesian himself son so relax. Fotu’s going to be a good one, just think he’d look more like a serious baller with a clean haircut. Like to see this kid noticed for how he plays, not for how he looks. Just my opinion brothers.

Off the subject but Deion Sanders Jr. made a verbal commit to June Jones and SMU.
