Great game, great win for UH … Wahine to LA

I’m trying to remember a more entertaining football game than that one last night between Hawaii and Navy. Balanced, hard-hitting, contrast in styles, big plays and a dramatic finish.

How does it rank for you among the most exciting UH games?

Also, some of the big plays are obvious, but want to read about your choices.

I understand why Hawaii is headed to the mainland for the NCAA volleyball tournament’s first two rounds, although I think it is unfair. But it is ridiculous that this third-ranked team is seeded 12th. Strength of schedule just has way too much bearing on power rankings, in all sports.

I knew that game was gonna be tough, but I was so happy that the defense was on top of the game for the whole game! Would love to see another tough outing against Wisconsin.

  2. Warrior Dave:

This ranks in my top 5 exciting UH games. The defense really stepped up and hard hits and sacks is what drives UH fans.

But what is sad is that ESPNU is an premium channel and I don’t think many home bound fans will ever get to see it.

Wish Oceanic can do something about this.

in recent times, beating boise state two years ago has no equal.
however, the ultimate was finally beating up byu with that garret gabriel led-team. that game has no equal.

  4. Sunset Bob:

I was most pleased with the defense and the best play was the improved tackling.

I’ve been a fan for a long time, so I can’t rank the win against Navy in my list of all time favorite games. However, the defense stepped up big time and played like the old school defenses coached by Dick Tomey and Bob Wagner. Like what Warrior Dave said earlier, UH fans go crazy over great defensive plays. More importantly, UH didn’t embarrass themselves on national TV. The game against Navy was a tough, hard hitting match, but there were very few penalties and no fights on the field or in the stands (at least none that I could see on TV).

This game took me back to the early Tomey years, where visiting teams left Aloha Stadium bruised and battered. The hits where hard and many. I sit way up in the Blue section and could hear the hits from the field. All of you need to get out to the game next week. There’s nothing like seeing a football game in person. Aloha Stadium was rocking!!!

This was a good game, but it ranks nowhere in the top 10 for sure, not even the 25. I have seen a lot of UH games, back since 1967 and some of them at the old Honolulu Stadium is better than this one. Come On, Man! It was exciting at the finish, but I shouldn’t have. UH should have kicked the field goal when it was 4th and 1 at the Navy 16. The play calling still continues to baffle me at critical times. Even the run up the middle was a mistake on 4th down. I kept telling my friends to run an option if they were going to run it. UH was lucky to get out of there w/ a win. They continue to make it difficult on themselves. But, the defense played hard I gotta admit.

it was the best defensive attitude i’ve seen since back in the nate jackson years. warriors should do well this saturday and finish 7-6. would rather see the the warriors play vs nevada against smu. fans will show up in their cold weather gear.

as to the wahines well, still no respect. its all about putting the ball on the floor. when our serving and passing is on tract, we can play against anybody. one good thing about the southwest ncaa bracket is that there are many talented high school players who will see first hand what the wahine’s are about. small, talented, scrappy, plays for each other and their coaches. recruiting coach shoji’s forte. good luck wahines!

I think this blog entry missed the mark. There was no mention of Tiger Woods, and his possible husband beating wife, possible attempted assault and/or attempted murder with a deadly weapon, possible infidelity that possibly set in motion the series of events that led to the auto accident, the possible child welfare investigation into who was watching the children when the couple was out destroying the vehicle, the possible violation of Woods’ endorsement deals with Buick (does that exist anymore?) in driving a Caddy, the possible failure of the air bag to deploy in the Caddy (leading to cuts), the possible psychological impact of this incident upon Vijay Singh, whether or not the tree is ok or has requires intervention of an arborist, the need for a traffic light at the site of the incident and the attendant negligence of the the government that has jurisdiction over the area where the accident occurred, what Dana Takahara-Dias thinks about the “adverstiy that’s been happening” to Tiger Woods, etc.

    C’mon, Dave!!!!!!!

How could you miss all of that????

For most exciting game, my pick is the one on Nov 17, 2001, UH vs. the Miami Redhawks from Oxford, Ohio. Miami was led by a red-shirt freshman quarterback by the name of Ben Roethlisberger. A high scoring game (Miami was up 28-21 at hafltime), it was nip and tuck the whole way. At the end, Miami scored a touchdown with 1:08 play to go up 51-49. After the kickoff, UH marched down the field so that with only a few seconds left they set up for a 29-yard field goal attempt by Justin Ayat. He missed! But, Miami was offside, and Ayat made the subsequent 24-yarder to win the game 52-51 with no time left on the clock. Roethlisberger was 40-53 for 452 yards and no picks. For UH, Nick Rolovich was 30-53-1 with 7 touchdown passes, which may be a UH record.
