Softball: Donations accepted

April 30th, 2010

A couple of weeks ago I wrote that maybe the time is now to take another look at charging attendance for University of Hawaii softball; it’s the most exciting game on campus right now, and the Wahine are on the verge of a WAC championship and possibly the single-season NCAA team home run record.

Charging for softball didn’t work when it was tried 10 years ago when UH also had a very marketable and successful team. I don’t think it was even considered a couple of years ago when Kate Robinson led the Wahine to the super regionals. I understand how coach Bob Coolen and the athletic department don’t want to scare off the developing fan base that is used to attending games free of charge.

So it looks like some fans have come up with a good compromise, at least for the time being until the offseason when UH can consider the topic for the coming years: Athletic director Jim Donovan said volunteers will man donation boxes at tonight’s game against Fresno State. All proceeds will go directly to the softball program, Donovan said.

Donovan said it’s a trial run.

“We want to make sure it’s non-intrusive and people don’t feel pressured, that they know it’s strictly a voluntary donation,” he said.

For future seasons, especially considering the youth of the nationally-ranked team that is undefeated in the WAC?

“We’ve had discussions about free versus not-free, and we’ll kick the tires on it. The jury’s still out,” Donovan said.

As many know or should be aware of, this is a new option in addition to donating to Koa Anuenue. I have set up monthly deductions from my checking account towards Wahine softball for almost two years now and have NEVER experienced a problem.

At the end of the calendar year you get a nice receipt too for donating and 100% of your donations are completely tax deductable.

    It’s a win-win situation.

Bob Coolen is the “Everyday Man’s Coach” and has worked his butt off for this program that doesn’t get the attention it deserves and the money it needs. Under Armour and Easton have been great partners for Wahine softball but every donation counts.

    Great job Tsaikos!

shoot, just charge two or three bucks. if fans cannot afford even that much, then we really need a new President because the economy must suck even more than i thought.

    Hey Dave!

Can we get some pictures of those volunteers?

Kudos to the group of fans that have come forward to bring this donation box idea to light. It was planned months ago but needed various approvals.

They are of the same group that donated money to the 2007 WAC Championship/NCAA Super Regional Wahine softball team so that they could get some nice bracelets to remember that year by for the rest of their lives and should the 2010 Wahine softball team do it again this season, they are ready to step up again where the WAC/NCAA and UH falls short of the funds.

They are a dedicated bunch of TRUE UH fans that put their money where their mouth is for sure!!!

Dave, Have you even been to one of the games this season

  9. dreardon:

I’ve been to about five softball games this year and written some columns and blog items about the team.
I did know that a group of fans stepped forward to make the donation system happen. That’s great. True fans!

Also, my apologies for not getting to the moderation here sooner so these comments could get posted. I was at the Warrior Bowl, filed a column and then was out shopping. Just got home.
I think the way the system on here works is that after you comment one or two times the comments no longer require moderation and go straight to the blog without requiring me checking them first.

I agree with what other posters here wrote in acknowledging the Tsaikos. They are the quintessential supporters of UH sports. They are in some respects to UH sports as what the Red Cross is to the community in lending a hand when there’s a need. My perception of the Tsaikos is that they orchestrate an idea, like the softball donation box, and a long list of other things they’ve done for the program, and it ends up being good music to your ears.

Which Wahine will be on the 1st and 2nd team. I think UH might have the WAC freshman and coach of the year.
