Jenna Rodriguez’s walk-off homer to beat Alabama and propel Hawaii to its first Women’s College World Series is one of the most clutch performances in the history of local sports.

On the road, against a dominant pitcher, so much on the line. All the momentum having swung back to the top-seeded Tide.

Where does you think it ranks all-time folks? … and I’m not talking just UH sports, state of Hawaii sports.

And now the news that the UH baseball team wins the WAC and advances to the NCAA tournament, and HPU wins to advance to the NCAA Division II national championship game.

So let’s ask another question: When is the last time so many good things happened in one day of Hawaii college sports? I’ll take a semi-educated guess and say “Never.”

This is what it must have felt like when the football team went to Norman, OK. And this win is about as big!

This one is way better than when Hallums said “this is better than statehood”!! the reason this one is up there is the ‘Bama pitcher was just dominating and a Wahine loss seemed inevitable. Going from apparent loss to walking off the the WCWS is awesome!!

I should have put money on it.

I don’t mean to brag but I called it first Mr Dave.

    Softball to OKC…Baseball to regionals.

What did Mack call that Notre Dame dance? We got a new basketball coach?

During the Sugar Bowl year we had a cupcake schedule. These women earned it, won on the road, and beat the #1 seed in their house. Great job to them and to Coach Coolen. Gotta love his emotions at the end.

The suspense in the end I would personally compare it to the LLWS when the Ewa Beach kids won in extra innings.

the baseball championship gives uh a total of 7 (volleyball 2, mtennis 2, softball 2, and baseball) regular season and/or conference tournament championships to lead the wac. bsu has 6 (wsoccer, football, wswimming & diving, wgymnastics, wtennis 2). usu has 4. fsu, nmsu, & latech has 3 each. sjsu has 2. and southern utah has 1 in wgymnastics. who knew southern utah and cal state fullerton is in the wac?

You know Dave, thought long and hard about this. There are so may clutch performances in UH history. Robert Lan against AFA, Tes Whitlock and Trevor Ruffin buzzer beaters. The 3 NCAA Mens appearances in basketball. 13-0 regular football season and BCS bid. Too many to name.

And any NCAA Championships for UH is the ultimate feat.

But in that moment, on ESPN, in that environment, against that pitcher (16 of the 20 outs to that moment were strikeouts), 16 vs. 1; That is the single best clutch performance (and moment) in the modern history of UH to date.

Win or lose, I like the double elimination regional format, the super regional (best two of three), and the preset bracketing for the national championship tournament. This is the fairest formula in college sports to determine a true champion.

Let’s hear it for winning THAT coinflip!

I also like that JD kept his word and offered Trap the extension that was promised by making the regionals. It shows integrity on JD’s part and puts a positive face on his administration.
