But is it art? (New Orleans Edition)

art2.jpgDECEMBER 29, 2007 - Leaves and grating on Convention Center Blvd., New Orleans. Exposure details: Canon EOS-1D Mark II, EF 70-200mm f2.8 (at 130mm), Aperture priority, 1/3200 sec at f/2.8, ISO 640, Incandescent balance

I think I was waiting to chase Colt Brennan down the street in front of the press hotel when the camera dangling from my shoulder was inadvertently fired aiming at this.

The camera was still set for incandescent light (I just came out of a presser inside), thus the nice blue hue.

best accidental shot i’ve ever seen. totally pro. wait… you ARE pro.

  4. Haole Adams Says:

this image is very amateurish ……my 7 year old daughter could have done better

you need to “learn to see” …ie….get lots of “coffee table” photography books and flip through them

  5. Wilma Says:

I agree with cw. Love the pic. Some great things come when you don’t expect them.

There is something peculiar about the shot…it draws me into it. The balance of the leaves and pebble enhances the darkness of the black negative space, while the blue achieves an ‘ancient’ feel to it. I feel as if I am in a primitive space. Great accident. Nothing amateur about it.

“Old guard” photogs for your paper (Warren Rolls, Jack Tichen, Jack Matsumoto, etc.)NEVER spun their mistakes into “art” shots. Mayhap, with the proper light balance setting, there would have resulted a more aesthetic photo with the cold metallic hue and texture of the grating underlying the warm, fall color(s) and contrasting texture of the leaves. Monochrome has it’s place and works beautifully in the hands of masters re: Adams, Weston, etc.

Oh well, who’s to say if we would ever have enjoyed pate feuilletée (sp?) (puff pastry) were it not for an apprentice’s mistake?

    Respectfully, but always analytical (sob!),

Oh puhleeze! Spoken and described like a dedicated oenophile. I like two buck Chuck’s (Charles Shaw at Trader Joe’s), myself. Actually, even by ignoring the wrong Kelvin setting, as the previous writer observed, a 7 year old would at least have had better composition….at the very least.

Thanks for the comments. Good to know someone is taking these “art” photos more seriously than I am.
