The word from Greeley, Colo.

Friday, August 31st, 2007

By Dave Reardon

Thanks for all your predictions and comments. Keep them coming. And don’t forget to vote Saturday night or Sunday morning for the play of the game for Warrior Replay.

Here are some words of wisdom from Andy Rosenthal, the sports editor of the Greeley Tribune:

Colt Brennan should be able to have a field day Saturday against the University of Northern Colorado. With the team’s No. 1 cornerback, Aaron Henderson, out for the season, the Bears will be forced to put Quincy Wofford in the staring lineup. Wofford will be making his first NCAA appearance in the game.
The game will, however, mark the return of wide receiver Andy Birkel, a University of Nebraska transfer who missed all of last season with a torn MCL. With Birkel back in the lineup, quarterback Dominic Breazeale will finally have a starting-caliber receiver to throw to.
In the end, however, Brennan and Hawaii’s dominant passing attack will prove to be far too powerful for UNC, playing its first game against a top tier opponent in recent years.
Hawaii 70, UNC 10.

Roberts cleared

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Dave Reardon

Junior CB Calvin Roberts is eligible to return to the practice field for tomorrow’s walk-through, since paperwork verifying his associate’s degree arrived at UH today.

“It was posted on the Internet, but they needed the actual paper,” Roberts said.

The College of San Mateo graduate was running at second team corner and as a backup on some special teams before he was pulled from practice Wednesday. He also did not practice today.

Roberts said he hopes to suit up for Saturday’s opener against Northern Colorado, but hadn’t been told anything by late this afternoon.

Brennan: “No worries”

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Dave Reardon

Quarterback Colt Brennan said he is not injured after leaving drills a few minutes early today when his foot was stepped on by a teammate during practice.

“No worries, you know how when your foot gets stepped on it hurts at first and it’s annoying,” Brennan said. “I’m walking fine right now, there’s nothing wrong.”

Soares out

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Dave Reardon

Starting outside linebacker Blaze Soares will not play Saturday in the opener against Northern Colorado, coach June Jones said after practice today.

Soares has a hamstring pull.

“I’m going to hold him out,” Jones said.

Soares hurt the muscle Saturday. The sophomore from Castle High School held out hope until today that the condition might improve enough to play Saturday.

“It’s better to wait, the LaTech game is more important. I don’t want to make it worse and miss two or three games,” Soares said. “But it’s going to be hard to just watch.”

Senior Brad Kalilimoku replaces Soares in the starting lineup.

Soares is the only projected starter out for Saturday, but Jones said defensive end John Fonoti, a sophomore figured to rotate in, won’t play. Fonoti is still recovering from bruised heels and did not practice today.

Also, senior reserve cornerback and special teams standout Ryan Keomaka returned to the team today. But he won’t be available to suit up Saturday, Jones said.

Another reserve cornerback, Calvin Roberts, did not practice today. The coach said UH is awaiting paperwork from Roberts’ junior college. “It’s supposed to come in today,” Jones said.

Around 75 players will dress for Saturday’s game, Jones said.
