Hawaii faces Belmont Friday in USC sub-regional

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

By Cindy Luis

Shoji actually called this one. He thought going to USC was a real possibility.I suggested San Diego but he thought USD would be seeded too to end up in his bracket.instead … Hawaii (28-3) will be heading to the sub-regional hosted by USC this week as the seventh overall seed in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament. The Rainbow Wahine put their 15-match winning streak on the line against Belmont (25-7), the champion of the Atlantic Sun Conference, in a first-round match Friday. In the other match, host USC (16-11) faces San Diego (23-4), the West Coast Conference champion. The winner of the sub-regional at USC advances to the regional at Colorado State. Also seeded in that regional is No. 2 Stanford. The overall No. 1 seed is defending champion Penn State (32-0) with Texas No. 3.

McMackin vs. Erickson?

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

By Dave Reardon

If there is one coach Greg McMackin is linked with more than June Jones, it’s Dennis Erickson.  And if Arizona State beats Arizona in their regular-season finale, it will probably be Erickson’s Sun Devils (or Arizona) in the Hawaii Bowl against UH. McMackin was Erickson’s defensive coordinator with the Miami Hurricanes, Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. They also coached together at Idaho and San Jose State, and matched wits in the 1999 Hawaii Bowl, when McMackin was UH defensive coordinator and Erickson was the head coach for Oregon State.

Mafua is starting tonight. In the house, former Wahine assistant Howard Wallace, the assistant at Texas-San Antonio.Singing the National Anthem and Hawaii Pono’i were UH manager Hedder Ilustre and assistant coach Ryan Tsuji.  Team is sitting opposite of where they usually are. Arena is still in a basketball configuration.

Farmer

By Dave Reardon

Jason’s feature today is on one of my all-time favorite Warriors, Dave Farmer. He came in as a walk-on four years ago from Santa Cruz, Calif. Every year other guys would be touted as the running backs who would get playing time, and every year, Farmer would find himself in the mix getting a good share of the playing time because of his hard-nosed blocking. People who talk about his lack of ability as a ballcarrier obviously haven’t watched him run. He’s not as slow as they think, and he’s actually got a little shake and bake.

Wahine win in 5

Quite a match. A little surprised they pulled it out 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-13. Passing was off. Cal Poly had great serving. Atherstone bothered Hawaii 2 years ago and she’s only gotten better. They’ll need to do a better job with Olowolafe. Still a good match to watch. 2 hours, 26 minutes.
