Wahine rewind 8-30

Was rather impressed how the Wahine didn’t fold in Set 3. I think last year’s team might have. They didn’t hold on to the calls that went against them and Kaufman didn’t let hitting negative get into her head. She served tough and played defense. Thought Ferrell was key, after a slow start, she really picked it up. Shoji even said he didn’t know if last year’s team would have pulled out Set 3.Danielson is just a delight in the interview room, so positive and honest. we’ll see how they match up with Texas and Cal next week. Good start for Hawaii. first 3-0 since 2004

Hawaii takes a 15-12 lead at the TTO, the biggest lead of the set. Hawaii has led by 2 with the Bruins leading once (at 11-10). 2 aces by Cubi-Otineru and a UCLA lift accounted for last three points.UCLA has come back to tie it at 19, last two points when blocking Kaufman and then Kaufman hit the antenna. Timeout UH.UCLA was up 23-22 but a kill by Danielson and a hitting error (started by a tough serve from Brandt) has Hawaii at set point 24-23. TO Bruins.Near ace by Brandt saved by the Bruins but Danielson hammered her 8th kill to end it. 25-23.

Wahine rewind 8-29

Happy it didn’t go five. might have missed our first deadline.A good match for Hewitt. Her 10 kills were pretty quiet but she came up big on 11 blocks. Cubi-Otineru had a double double 13 kills and 14 digs, and a really smart shot to the empty corner that put UH ahead 28-27 in Set 3.Their second set letdown has been a trend over past years. They seemed really out of sync tonight in Set 2Kaufman apparently said something about wanting the ball more. She was 8-0-10 in Sets 3 and 4.Hawaii outblocked SCU 14-9, 8-4 in the final two sets. The Broncos had only 4 kills in Set 4.Ferrell was a little off in her hitting but made some great defensive plays. hawaii hit .373 for the night, opened with a strong .556 and closed with a strong .522.Be interesting how they do against UCLA. The Bruins are tall but not as quick as Hawaii’s outsides. it will come down to serve and pass again.

Met Kalei Adolpho tonight. She orally committed to UH. She’s a 6-1 middle from Molokai High. A junior. Said this was her first match tonight in the arena and thought it was so cool.

Hawaii wins Santa Clara 3-1

Same starting lineup for Hawaii.Wahine up 15-14 at the TTO. teams pretty evenly matched.couple of mistakes by SCU and a nice redirect dump by Mafua has UH up 19-16. Timeout Broncos.Hawaii win 25-19, UH hitting .556.Set 2 Wahine looked very flat, trailed most of the way and held off three set points before a rare overpass by Danielson results in Krista Kelley pounding it back, Broncos wins 27-25Hawaii holds off two set points before pulling out a 30-28 win. Danielson with 16 kills so far. Hawaii’s block much better, 11-6 edge.Santa Clara had nothing let and Hawaii found its rhythm. UH wins 25-13. Danielson ties career high with 22 kills and Kaufman ties high with 13, while hitting a career high .765. 13-0-17.

UCLA-Western Michigan 8-29

Smallish crowd, maybe a couple hundred. WMU led early (9-7). Great rally, I’d say at least 10 plays on either side, UCLA finally wins it to go ahead 14-13. Gil serves an ace, then 2 WMU hitting errors … and now it’s 118-13UCLA wins Set 1 25-17 and Set 2 25-14.Bruins went up 20-9, ended up winning 25-15 with UCLA’s second team finishing the match
