Warriors-Waves rewind Night 2

March 27th, 2010

A really good win for Hawaii tonight. they hit .367, outblocked Pepperdine 14-9. Grgas was a factor tonight 7-0-11, and Hunt much more efficient 7-1-13. hawaii was able to win without Walker coming up big. 5 kills, 6 errors.

Even tough Zemljak had only three aces his serving kept the Waves off balance. Wade said Nejc is more crosscourt and Umlauft line, but tonight they went opposite to change things up. Riecks got aces 3 times in the middle of Set 2.

Another good night for Rawson, 9 kills, 8 blocks.

IMHO, the coaching staff does wonders when they have tape of the first night. they’ve been able to come back after a loss every time except for that first time at Stanford.

Hawaii sweeps Pepperdine 3-0 Night 2

March 27th, 2010

Warriors had a quick start and never trailed, winning Set 1 30-20. Umlauft 6-1-11, Schleppenbach 5-0-8, Torres 2-5-11.

Hawaii pulls out Set 2 34-32. Warriors led most of the way, Pepperdine rallied, took 2 set points at 30-29 and 31-30. UH came back with 3 set points, with a kill by Grgas making it 33-32. Schleppenbach hitting error ends it. UH had three aces in seven serves, all mishandled by Riecks. Umlauft 14-2-27. Hunt 5-0-8. Schleppenbach 11 kills, Riecks with 9, Torres with 6, hitting .000.

Hard to gauge from Gametracker but it seemed to be a winnable game for Hawaii, especially Set 2, when they were up 28-24. Reminded me a lot like Set 1 vs. long beach state last week.

Wade said if the OHs were a little more consistent, they would have been in better shape. Hunt seemed to have disappeared, 2 kills, hit negative. Sounds like Walker was forcing it at the end. Sounded like most of the blocks were on sets that were pretty predictable.

We’ll see what happens tomorrow. Hawaii’s been pretty good about getting a split on the road, with the exception of Stanford. They’ve only lost once on Saturday night, one of the players pointed out, and that was Stanford.

Pepperdine sweeps Hawaii 3-26

March 26th, 2010

Hawaii trailed most of the way, tied it at 22 but Waves finish it out 30-26.

Warriors led 28-24 but couldn’t put it away. Much like last week’s match against Long Beach State, they had three swings at ending it. Corey Riecks had four straight kills and Rawson blocked by Santos to win it for the Waves. Rawson 8-1-11. Umlauft 14-3-26.

Riecks 12-2-21, J.D. Schleppenbach 11-1-15.

Umlauft finished with 20 kills but Walker had three consecutive errors at the end of Set 3. Pepperdine closes it out 30-26.
