Blog on a bit of hiatus

Sorry gang but I am on the mainland taking care of some things with my mom and won’t be able to post much. Appreciate you keeping the decisions alive.

As for the roster, depending on who competitive it is, Shoji has waited until days before the match to make the roster official. There’s been a couple of preview issues where we went to press before the final roster and listed people as tentative. It will be interesting to see how many he carries, who redshirts.

Shoji x 2 at Downtown Athletic Club 7-19

University of Hawaii women’s volleyball coach Dave Shoji and his son Kawika Shoji, will be the featured speakers at this month’s Downtown Athletic Club pau hana gathering. The event is set for Thursday, July 19 at the Hukilau in downtown Honolulu.

The event is open to the public, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the program starting at 5:30. To RSVP, call the Hukilau at 523-3460.

Believe Tita Ahuna will be there to talk about her TAVA Tots program and Sean Carney about his Elite  Sports Academy.

Grass tourney during Dragon Boat Festival

The Hawaii Dragon Boat Festival is holding two great events that will get your heart pumping on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29. The Hawaii Dragon Boat Festival Grass Volleyball Tournament and High Performance Training for Injury Prevention will take place at Ala Moana Beach Park.

Grass Volleyball Tournament

Gather a team and register to serve, set and spike at Ala Moana Beach Park. Teams of up to six players can enter according to age division and level of play. A cash prize of $100 will be awarded to the winning adult team.

·         12 and Under: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

·         14 and Under: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sunday, July 29

Registration starts 30 minutes before each event

·         Junior Boys, Adult Men and Women: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

·         Adult Co-Ed (at least 2 women on the court): 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

·         Open Division & B Division: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

U.S. men 2-0 in Pan Am

It is confusing with the Olympic team headed to London but this group are the ones who didn’t make the Olympic team but are considered part of the national team.

Honolulu’s Kawika Shoji had 18 asssts as a young group of players from the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team dominated Mexico, 25-8, 25-16, 25-18 Tuesday at the Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Shoji (‘Iolani, Stanford), the team captain, added a kill and an ace. Middle Matt Rawson (Hawaii) had five kills and a match-high three blocks.
The U.S. (2-0) finish pool play Wednesday against Brazil. The Americans finished with advantages in kills (42-23), blocks (11-7), aces (7-2) and digs (24-7).

U.S. men open with win in Pan Am Cup

The U.S. men’s Pan Am volleyball team, with two players with Hawaii ties on the roster, opened up the Pan Am Cup with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-12 sweep of Venezuela in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Setter and team captain Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani, Stanford) had 43 assists and a block in playing the whole match. Middle Matt Rawson (Hawaii) played in two sets, starting the third, and finished with 3 kills in hitting 1.000.

The U.S. had a 14-2 advantage in aces.

The team plays Mexico today and Brazil Wednesday.
