story from Wednesday’s practice

Ann sent me a couple of notes from this afternoon.

Said that Danielson, Cubi-Otineru and Mafua all came to practice.

The funny one is tere’s a stray cat in Stan Sheriff. A few people tried to corner it a few days ago, but it got away up in the bleachers. This morning, it left a stinky present right in the middle of the visitor’s bench.

From UH

Hawaii junior outside hitter Emily Hartong was named  the first Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the season today.

Hartong earned the honor after a stellar performance over the weekend where she was named the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational Most Outstanding Player. UH topped sixth-ranked Stanford in the championship match, also beating Albany and Saint Mary’s for its fifth straight Chevron Tourney title.

For the tournament, Hartong averaged 4.36 kills, 2.73 digs and 0.73 blocks per set while hitting .286 to lead the ‘Bows to victories over Albany, Saint Mary’s and No. 6 Stanford. She led UH with 14 kills against Albany and 17 against Saint Mary’s, and added 13 digs against the Gaels to secure her first double-double of the season.

Against the nationally-ranked Cardinal, Hartong put forth another 17-kill effort and hit .256 with eight digs and one service ace. In the season opener against the Great Danes, she hit at a .455 (14-4-22) clip adding nine digs and a pair of blocks.

Hartong, a 2011 AVCA Second Team All-American, will lead the No. 8 Rainbow Wahine into action this week against San Francisco, Baylor and California in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic.

That had been my guess from last night. Not that my guess, or the rankings, mean much

first place votes in parenthesis

1. Nebraska (32). 2. Texas (24). 3. UCLA (1). 4. Penn State (1). 5. USC (2). 6. Hawaii.

then Purdue, Florida State, Stanford and Kentucky.

Wahine-Cardinal rewind

Quite a match by both teams. Hawaii finally settled down and Stanford seemed to get lost in the end, forcing too much, trying too hard maybe. Shoji credited the crowd with adding energy.

I would have voted Croson the MVP. She played great. But Hartong came back really well from a slow start. Glad to see Longo make the all-tournament team (yes, i voted for her).

Goodman swung with authority at the end so hopefully that bashing will end … at least until next week.

Goodman 6-2-14, Vorster 9-0-19, 2 BA, Croson 21-7-44, 11 digs 2 BA. Uiato 3-0-4, 42 assists 11 digs, Hartong 17-7-39 1 ace, 8 digs, Adolpho 5-3-1 3 digs 3 BA; Longo 5 assists, 1 ace, 16 digs. Kastl 0-0-1 1 BA, Maeda 5 digs, 3 assists, 17 reception 0 errors. only one who got aces was Hartong.

UH hit .312 for Set 4 to Stanford’s 114. Wahine 311 for the match, Cardinal 244. Wahine with 55 digs to the Cardinal’s 48. Stanford 1 ace, 10 SE. Hawaii 2 aces, 8 SE. Stanford had the block edge 10-5 but it was pretty even after Set 2.

Shoji said he was glad they got Stanford early, said they’re young in some spots and will be very good. Thought his team played well down the stretch, had some luck and got to some balls that looked like they’d go down. Said Vorster is still learning, that her height makes up for a lot. She was out of position on that one block in Set 4 but was athletic and lanky enough that she got a hand on it and the team was able to play it.

A good win for them. Still a long season and some good competition over the next weeks before the Big West opens.

Team is off Monday. So am I. have a good night.

About 15 minutes to first whistle.

Hawaii will be starting the same lineup as the past 2 nights: Croson and Hartong LS, Goodman RS, Uiato S, Longo L, Vorster and Adolpho MB.

haven’t seen Stanford’s lineup. Pretty sure they’ll start Wopat in the middle. She didn’t play Saturday but was 10-1-15 vs. St. Mary’s Friday.
