Texas sweeps Oregon for NCAA title

December 15th, 2012

Texas was pretty impressive today, sweeping Oregon 25-11, 26-24, 25-19. Think all the final four experience the Longhoorns had over the past few years played a big part, especially at the end of Set 2 where they outscored the Ducks 5-1.

Rather interesting that the all-tournament team had five Texas players, 2 from Oregon, 1 from Michigan and none from Penn State

Junior libero Sarah Palmer (HBA) hadd 11 digs out of 33. Freshman DS Kat Brooks (Punahou) with 4 digs, 1 SE.

Texas with 15 blocks but more impressive was their hitting .438 with just 4 hitting errors the whole match. 11-1-25 Set 1, 19-2-33 in Set 2, 13-1-31 Set 3.

First title for Texas since defeating Hawaii in 1988 in Minneapolis. A chilly night that Gov. Waihee attended. Wahine gathered after to sing Christmas carols in the hotel lobby. Particularly remember Martina Cincerova and her dad singing. The Texas players came down as well.

A different time and era. I remember UT’s Dawn Davenport asking Coach Mick Haley if Texas would light the tower for their national championship. He said yes.

It is a big deal to have the Texas Tower lighted up in burnt orange. usually reserved for the men’s teams. Texas wasn’t too far removed from being one of the last holdouts for their women’s athletic department, which was separate from the men’s, to join the NCAA. As late as 1981, Texas was in the AIAW where their women’s athletic director Donna de Varona was AIAW president. Interestingly, de Varona beat out UH’s Donnis Thompson for the presidency. De Varona was the final AIAW prez.

BYUH’s Navalta named DII Coach of Year

December 12th, 2012

Great news for Coach Wil, who told his team and then me that Friday was his last match at BYUH. (He hasn’t told the BYUH SID yet, tho.) Great season, picked up his 600th win too. although the AVCA has an incorrect record for him. I have him at 611-145.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA announced that BYU-Hawaii head women’s volleyball coach Wilfred Navalta has been selected as the 2012 AVCA Division II National Coach of the Year.

They advanced to the NCAA II semifinals were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by the now six-time defending champion Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears.
The team was ranked first in Pacific West Conference matches with an undefeated finish of 16-0. They established themselves as one of the top teams in nation, having been ranked in the top-10 of the AVCA Coaches Poll for the vast majority of the season. Due to their excellent regular season, BYU-Hawaii was selected as the host of the West Region of the NCAA Tournament. Three BYUH players were named to the West All-Region Team and as AVCA All-Americans: Ying Chun Chen, Shih Ting Chen, and Lauren Hagermeyer.
Navalta has won eight NAIA National Championships and two Division II Championships during his tenure at BYUH. He was honored as National Coach of the Year in 1999 and 1996. Navalta won NAIA Regional Coach of the Year awards in 1996 and 1997, and he won the Division II West Region Coach of the Year in 1998, making 2012 his second DII Region Coach of the Year award.
