A diversion … online bracket contest
By Cindy Luis
We can all use a break from the insanity …
Guess this blog has some national interest. Got an email this morning suggesting that VolleyShot posters might like to participate.
Northwestern Mutual is unveiling a March Madness-style bracket contest around volleyball to engage fans in friendly competition.. The contest marks the first time an NCAA sponsor is extending the excitement normally associated with Men’s Basketball to other key championships.
Beginning today, fans can visit Northwestern Mutual on Facebook, like the page, and fill out a bracket. The winner with the closest final bracket will win a $500 dollar gift card to the NCAA Shop, while one additional randomly selected participant will receive a $100 dollar gift card to the NCAA Shop. The deadline for entry is Thursday, November 29 by 7:30 a.m. HST
I will post my bracket later.

During his 27th season as head coach at Brigham Young University-Hawaii, Wifred Navalta led his team to a 21-3 season record, a .875 winning percentage. The team was ranked first in Pacific West Conference matches, with an undefeated finish of 16-0. The team is currently tied for the No. 5 ranking in the AVCA Poll and will advance to the West Region Tournament. Three BYUH players were named to the West All-Region Team, including Ying Chun Chen, Shih Ting Chen, and Lauren Hagermeyer. Navalta has won eight NAIA National Championships and two Division II Championships during his tenure at BYUH. He was honored as National Coach of the Year in 1999 and 1996. Navalta won NAIA Regional Coach of the Year awards in 1996 and 1997, and he won the Division II West Region Coach of the Year in 1998, making this his second DII Region Coach of the Year award.
Not sure what your point is
Sorry, no DII bracket contest.
you know we had this info on Navalta in last week’s paper, right?
It was announced last Wednesday. my bad for not posting it. I will be up in Laie for the regional.
Congrats to Coach Navalta!
Cindy,
Can you confirm the exact number of team members that are allowed to travel for the NCAA regionals?
Official travel party is 22.
school can decide how to divide that.
they have 4 caoches, usually 1 administrator.
leaves 17 spots
Hawaii has 17 active players. looks like that is the party if they take Kaleo Baxter.
Back to insanity, interesting article belowabout the huskies, Hawaii getting some respect and coments are a must read:

Looks like Vansant is back to practice today and expected to play. I don’t know if she’s a 6 rotation player or do serve-receive but if I am Hawaii or Huskies 1st round opponent I will target her and wear out her legs. JM seems pretty confident otherwise.
Serve Munoz any chance UH gets, she can’t pass to save her life.
Vansant is a 6 rotation player. If she plays, she’ll need to stay in all the way around. if UW utilizes a 6-2, they’ll eat through substitutions pretty quickly.
I like how they acknowledge UH being a “perennial power” shows the writer didn’t write this article blind. Also, judging from the comments some aren’t going to be to surprised if UW loses to a under rated UH team.
Thanks for the link.
Thanks Cindy for the information on the travel roster for the regionals
Out of curiosity, who was on this tournament selection committee and what is each person’s affiliation?
It may seem like a neither here nor there thing, but it can be a useful thing to know. Remember former UCLA athletics administrator Judith Holland? If my recollection is correct, she was on the committees that snubbed Vince Goo’s Wahine teams. She even had the nerve (or gall) to subsequently apply for AD here.
Your memory is right on about Judith Holland, who got her UCLA team into the NCAA tournament when UH was a Top 20 team with no invite. She did have a lot of nerve.
been trying to find the committee members to pass along. have not had any success but I know someone here will have that info.
Hey maybe we should have hired her. Get Holland on our team, and get some positive action done with the program.LOL!!!
