AD search committee meets tonight
By Dave Reardon
The search committee for the new UH athletic director is scheduled to meet for the second time tonight.
The first meeting last week was organizational.
Known applicants include Keith Amemiya, interim AD Carl Clapp, Jim Donovan, Rockne Freitas, Marilyn Moniz-Kaho’ohanohano and Bob Wagner.
A UH spokesman declined to say how many applications the school had received.

DR - what’re the odds (if any) on a hiring announcement by the end of the week?
Please make a move, UH-AD SC!

Thanks for digging up some current news regarding the AD search. So much for a speeding up the process of hiring the AD. But the main thing is that they get it right.
Saw Chancellor Hinshaw at the last basketball game so I said, Hope you guys hire a good AD. She replied, I hope so too!

The announcement of the Under Armor deal certainly gives Carl Clapp’s candidacy a shot in the arm.
February 26th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
No it shouldn’t because the lead people in this deal was supposedly Mack and McNamara.

My money is on Marilyn Moniz K. She has by far the longest tenure in the UHAD not to mention she meets various criteria for the perfect ‘Politically Correct’ hire.

Things are beginning to happen fast, so you could be right.

We are looking for the perfect hire. Politically correct is no reason to hire the wrong person.

She said she’s being interviewed tomorrow.

Dave,
So do you think the names here mentioned are the leading candidates, or are the only known candidates that UH cares to reveal publicly? Are the rumors that Dick Tomey has applied false, and/or could there be a prominent candidate(s) being considered that no one is aware of? Thanks

Why Marilyn ? I guess you’re going to lose money because its either Freitas or Donovan. The politically correct comment is dumb!
February 27th, 2008 at 10:04 am
The deal still happened under Clapp’s watch.
February 27th, 2008 at 10:49 am
UH has revealed no candidates publicly. Several have told us themselves they applied.
We’ve tried several times to contact Dick Tomey to find out if he applied, but he has not responded. He’s in a sensitive situation regarding his current job, as are several other applicants.

My take is that he did, indeed apply. If he had not, he would have come right out and said that he did not, thus ending all speculation and reassuring the administrators and fans at SJSU.

Clapp is reputed to be the type not to have to “take the credit”. But I’m sure things that have happened under his watch (i.e. Under Armour deal, new season tickets sales, new coaches offices, etc.) will be discussed during the interview process.
February 27th, 2008 at 11:26 am
I guess the overall perception is the UA deal boosts Clapp’s candidacy. I still believe that this will come down to Donovan and Freitas, and Freitas will be offered.

Political Correctness plays a big part in high-profile hirings like this. Steve tsai mentions in his blog (comments section) that Gov. Lingle is actually supporting Marilyn for the UHAD. She has some powerful supporters which is why none of us should be surprised if she’s calling the shots on lower campus in 2 months.

Freitas got skeletons in the closet dating back to his Kamehameha schools days. Because of this, I’m guessing that he is the perfect candidate! Go Rockne!
The politically correct statement is not out of line. After all, we ignored great candidates the last time around and went with a politically correct hiring of an African American. No knock on African Americans, it just showed that in light of the whole national climate regarding black coaches and administrators, we went with Herman.

Marilyn ran Parks and Rec on Maui back when Lingle was there. MMK was considered a strong political up-and-comer.

Dave,
Parks and recs on Maui is a bit different than a dvision 1 athletic program with a budget of over 20 million dollars. Nothing against Moniz, but UH needs someone who can ” TAKE US TO THE NEXT LEVEL”!

If Hawaii is looking for a change, Keith Amemiya is that change! Look what he’s done for local sports. Yes, his experience is minimal for collegiate sports, but a well organized, intelligent person like Keith can pick up the pieces quickly and get moving. Mr. Donovan does not fit the part of the face of the University, Mr. Freitas has issues, Mrs. Moniz Kaho’ohanohano does not fit the role, Coach Wagner is the past. If the University is looking to move forward, let’s think “out of the box” and really move forward!
