Aloha, Donnis

By Cindy Luis

Had received a number of e-mails from the mainland after they read my story about Donnis. I am very sad. and once again it reminds me to go call people who I know aren’t doing well. Had put off going to Leahi to see her. My loss. Donnis was one of the first feature stories I did for the Star-Bulletin in 1981. I can remember doing it in Klum Gym right after she accepted the job to be the superintendent of Hawaii schools. Was happy to include her in my Title IX series in 2002. hard to believe it was written over 8 years ago. The most interesting thing I think is something that didn’t happen. She was up to be the AIAW president in 79, right about the time the NCAA was trying to take over women’s sports. Texas A.D. was elected and Texas was among a number of schools who held out being taken over by the NCAA in 1980. I wonder if UH would have held out for the 1 year if Donnis had been elected.
