And a belated congrats to BYUH

December 2nd, 2012

Spent a great 3 days up at BYUH for the DII Regional. Very high level play all three days.

BYUH’s setter is really amazing. She’s one of three Taiwanese players Navalta has brought in.

I know the Seasiders didn’t get to show much against UH last month. They are much better than they were at the SSC.

Good to see Tuli Peters Tevaga get a final season too.

Seasiders scrambling to get to Florida by Wednesday. Navalta was trying to put together travel last night after the win.

They take on West Texas A&M think around 10 a.m. HST.

Last time they got this far was 2002. They won it all.

Good luck to them , hope they win it all.

Anybody else watching UCLA/UH from 2003 on K5?
It seems to me that Hartong hits just as hard as Kim W . Kim was soo amazing in the backrow.
Hard to believe that was a decade ago wow.

Lily doesn’t hit as hard as I remember when I was a kid.

I believe with a year under her belt, playing outside, and the backrow, Emily Hartong, can be just as good as all the other Wahine greats, Tee Williams, Kim Willoughby. and even Kanani Danielson.

        Highly concur!!!!

Congratulations to Michelle & BYU-H!!! We are so lucky to have such great representatives of Hawaii collegiate volleyball this year in their respective divisions. GOOD LUCK! You guys are sooo lucky to be avoiding all this Vog!

Next year should be even a better team. Right side needs to get stronger for next year. My suggestion would be training Tuaniga on the right side. She can offer a better block, fire power, & hits a heavy ball. With the amount of middles, she’ll never see the starting line up. The only way is for her to play on the right. She’s has great potential.

As for the RS, Goodman probably did the best job this past season with her consistency. She came in, got several kills
, & left the court. Props to her. Hopefully she can put on some muscle & meat by next season and earn her starting spot back.

Competition on the right is deeper than the middle and I don’t think Tuaniga has the armswing to play Opp.

    texas, YES!
Arizona , meh they wont help rpi
Northwestern, if they have a good season could help rpi
San diego, definitely will help rpi

    • Cindy Luis December 4, 2012 at 7:49 pm

you don’t know what the RPI will be next year for the teams in the tournament. Arizona playing in the Pac-12 will help if the Pac-12 is still rated one of the top conferences.
the Big West should be better next year.
somewhere someone said something abut UCR going to DII. UCR was no worse than LaTech. There are going to be bottom teams in every conference.

Cindy, just for your info, got this from Ann’s column, in this morning’s SA. Texas, UCLA, San Diego, Arizona, and Northwestern, so far are coming next fall. Comparing this past preseason to next year, Stanford to Texas, a wash, UCLA to UCLA, California to Arizona, also a wash, San Diego to San Diego St., another wash, Northwestern to Baylor, a final wash. Hopefully, the other teams that Dave Shoji brings in will be an upgrade to the other teams, Albany, San Francisco, Idaho, and St. Mary’s, that the Wahine faced this preseason. Hoping the teams the Dave Shoji can bring in to replace those 4 teams, comes from the ACC, SEC, maybe another B1G team, and also another Big 12 team. Dave also mentioned that he felt the BWC should be slightly better. The Wahines and Dave cannot rely on the BWC to boost their RPI. Yes, San Diego St. is being added to the conference, but so is Boise St. By the addition of Boise St., that will nullify San Diego St’s addition to the BWC. Also, Pacific will be leaving the BWC next year, so that will hurt the RPI. So if Dave Shoji is not able to bring in 4 quality teams to replace those 4 mentioned above, it will be deja vu all over again, when it comes time for the Selection Committee. Hope Dave Shoji realizes that. .

I hope the girls learned that the loss to cal was the difference between hosting and getting sent on the road, they win that and washington plays at UH instead!

    • Cindy Luis December 3, 2012 at 1:09 pm

Doubt very seriously if they would have sent UW here. UW likely would have still been seeded and hosted.
What hurt UH was the Big West having such a down year and the NCAA selection committee being myopic.

They said Jim Donovan took some administration people to the basketball final four on the mainland so they can see what it is like at a basketball final four. I wish they would put just as much effort into the volleyball final four or at least try to do something about the diss the wahines gets year after year. There might not be much they can do but at least make an effort.

    • Cindy Luis December 3, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Not sure what you’re suggesting UH do. Taking administrators to the volleyball final four will do nothing to help UH get a seed.
UH has hosted the final four twice, was turned down for it in 2009. They do as good a job, if not better, than the other FF sites that I’ve been to. And I’ve been to almost a dozen.

      • Gogetem December 3, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Just meant that someone could possibly lodge a legitimate complaint. I know it won’t do any good but I guess just feeling that someone made an effort to complain instead of just complaining about it locally. And I guess I kind of look at it as why are the admin going to a final four when the UH basketball hasn’t ever come close to getting there.

        • Cindy Luis December 3, 2012 at 10:47 pm

The comment was about Donovan taking admin to the final four for basketball. I don’t know when that was or ever if it is true. When Riley was basketball coach UH had a suite at the final four to promote the Rainbow Classic. Is this what was referred to with Donovan and admin?

          • Gogetem December 3, 2012 at 11:23 pm

Sorry, not making myself clear. I just feel as if they are putting so much effort into the sport that really hasn’t gone anywhere and instead of running (or flying) around to see an event for something that might never happen, more effort can be placed elsewhere like volleyball. The situation with basketball did happen because Gina Mangieri did an investigation for Ch 2 and even interviewed Jim Donovan. I’m not saying he could make the difference by complaining but it would be nice to see some effort being made to truly find out what is going on because for the first time, you really hear the frustration fromDave publicly. He usually is not very vocal about this issue at least to not this extent. Just my opinion.

          • Cindy Luis December 4, 2012 at 7:45 pm

            thanks gogetum. Couldn’t reply directly.
wasn’t doubting that it happened. was just asking to have it clarified because of the situation UH used to have when promoting the Rainbow Classic.

  • WaWa December 3, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Did anybody end up e-mailing those NCAA people?

    • dedicatedfan December 3, 2012 at 4:46 pm

Finally, got their email addy’s from BIK, so I will start doing that tomorrow. Starting with Chairperson, Diane Turnham. Who I strongly believe would not recognize a volleyball when she saw one. Probably believes either, a soccerball, basketball, baseball, or even a softball, is a volleyball.

      • Cindy Luis December 3, 2012 at 10:49 pm

No need to be rude about a person you know nothing about. but agree that they should have people with better VB credentials on a selection committee, including retired coaches, instead of people trying to pad their resumes by being on an NCAA committee.
