I love this hire, thank god JD decided to go for it.
I really hope Scotty Wong is the asistant, and would love to see former warriors like Brian Beckwith get a shot as well to be on the coaching staff.

Been told that Brian B., Jake Schkud and Sean Carney have all expressed an interested in being a grad assistant. it’s a position that doesn’t exist currently. the third assistant is Mason Kuo, don’t know if he’d stay on.
I think Wong would be a great assistant hire but would he leave Pepperdine for it?
spoke with Charlie today. he was already back in Stockton. he sounded very happy.

Yes…he’s a great hire…one that I am most excited about. Glad he is happy. He deserves it. I was so sorry to see him leave the wahines. Glad he’s back.

There were many qualified candidates for the position so whoever was chosen wouldn’t phase me one way or another.
Now that a decision has been made, all that matters to me is whether Coach Wade can get it done.
We all know that recruiting is the life blood of collegiate athletics. Right now our mens team sucks and we need better talent to turn the program around. If Coach Wade can do that, then he’ll be successful. If he can’t, then he’ll fail.
Time will tell whether that search committee made the right decision. If it turns out they were wrong, then they should not be on the next search. If it turns out they were right, then they should fire Coach Shoji and appoint Coach Wade the Wahine coach.
For Coach Wade to be successful, he needs to convince some of the best players in the land to stay in or come to Hawaii instead of going to the Stanfords, USCs, or (gag) Barbarians of Westwood (I can’t even say their name!). That is a tall, tall order indeed. But if he can do that, he needs to replace Coach Shoji ASAP because that is something Coach Shoji hasn’t been able to do for over 20 years and counting. As a matter of fact Coach Shoji will never do it. Thank the volleyball Gods he’s close to retiring please!!!!…..

Tita Ahuna, Robyn Ah Mow, Lilly Kahumoku, Kanoe Kamanao (to name just a few over the last 20 years) … yeah you’re right, Lyle, the local players who Shoji convinced to stay and play in the islands were pretty abysmal…
The Wahine’s best teams (the championship and final four teams) have been a solid mix of local, mainland and foreign recruits. So if anything, the better criticism of Shoji would be that he hasn’t found a solid foreign recruit in a few years … probably not since Veronica Lima or Maja Gustin.

Dave Shoji is a fine coach. What we forget is that because we have no professional teams is that these are COLLEGE teams with college athletes…and our college athletes can READ so we should be considerate of their lives. I, for one, couldn’t go to school and graduate with a decent GPA and put in the practice, travel, and game times that these young men and women do…but maybe I am also not very talented.
And don’t forget…we beat usc at usc this year….wahine volleyball.

When do season tickets go on sale and do u think they’ll be cheaper like the football tickets?

  • Cindy Luis June 9, 2009 at 5:06 am

haven’t heard about sales. it’s usually July. they dropped prices last year. not sure if they’ll go lower again. Am on the mainland and will check when i get back to work the 16th.

Over the last 20 years and counting, the athletes Coach Shoji has recruited have not been good enough to get it done.
It’s all about the ring. Not the WAC ring!!!… The RING!!!….
The win over the Women of Troy was an anomaly. It’s not going to be a recurring theme.
The wahine will never win The Title as long as Coach Shoji is at the helm.
I once said like Coach Bowden and Coach Paterno, Coach Shoji’s time has passed. Soon after in an interview with a tv reporter, Coach Shoji said he wasn’t going to coach as long as Bowden and Paterno. When I heard that, I knew there was a volleyball god.
It’s time for some new blood. The wahine program is in need of a transfusion.
When are all you Shoji apologist going to realize this guy will never get it done!!!…
Ahhhh, nothing like a few incendiary words to get the comments flowing huh???…
Season tickets? Better cherry pick the games. Go to the meaningful games that tell you where the program is at. Don’t waste your money on the rubbish games. Times are hard.
When you see those “meaningful games”, you’ll see that the wahine program is stuck in second gear. Let’s hear it all you Shoji apologists!!!…
