Bring water and an extra shirt
By Dave Reardon
Outside is no place to be at noon in August in Gainesville, Fla.
But that’s where the Hawaii football team and its most stalwart fans will be Aug. 30. The Warriors open against the Gators in The Swamp, and the game starts at 12:30 p.m.
Gainesville is one of the most humid places I’ve ever experienced, and it’s at its sticky, muggy worst in the summer.

Whoever chose the 12:30 pm start time is a fool. I was stationed at Fort Benning, GA and I can tell you that the heat and humidity of a summer day in the south is absolutely miserable. The Army had enough sense to halt outdoor training on hot summer days. On days where high temperatures and high humidity levels were expected, we did our outdoor physical training very early in the morning or just before sunset.

Unfortunately, the 12:30 kickoff time is dictated by TV (otherwise, kickoff would be at 6:00). We had the same thing happen last year too.
And yes, it is pretty much Dante’s Inferno at that time of the day. If any of you are making the trip, UF does a good job of making sure there is plenty of water and “cool zones” where you can at least get some relief from the heat.
